From Bill Pierson, Coordinator Windmill City Chili Cookoff:

BATAVIA IL—Tired of the triple-digit heat in the south? Plan your escape now. The 17th Illinois State Championship Chili Cookoff will be held on July 25 in Batavia IL. The normal high temperature for Northern Illinois at the end of July is 83°. TICC Champion, Susan Dean has decided to "play it cool" and attend. If you do plan to join her; please leave the heat behind. Batavia was recently ranked #56 on Money Magazine's list of Best Places to Live. We'd like to keep that honor.

Sorry, we don't have on-site RV parking, but we do have hotels and there is a forest preserve with water & electric and a dump station nearby. For information, contact Bill Pierson at 630.879.7934 or
wccco@comcast.net.

From Bill Pierson:

Shannon IL—Last Saturday's "Behind the Fence Chili Cookoff" is held in conjunction with the Illinois State Barbecue Championship, KCBS Style. The site is Shannon's Lions Park which is know as barbecue's "Field of Dreams." It really does remind one of the baseball movie, complete with ball diamond and cornfields. The last couple of years though, it has resembled the Everglades. There's nothing like driving an eight ton motorhome in a swamp to experience that sinking feeling. Fortunately, the rains subsided during the day and the ground firmed up so we could make it out of Shannon without a tow.

This was the eleventh year for this cookoff and has produced many fond memories over the years. Sometimes some barbecue team members cook chili with us, sometimes they don't. This year we had three from the BBQ side and two of them placed. One young man was really "into it" and we just might see him again.

The winners:
