From Ken Rodd:
Hello,

A couple of weeks ago, I put a request for help on Janice's Blog for volunteers to send the CASI press release to newspapers in their local area - as we know, some cities have smaller papers often looking for items to put in. Only one person from North Texas responded. Really kinda sad in a way.

Roger and I will start getting them out -

David Richardson is sending out the radio Spot announcements to over 100 stations in New Mexico and in Texas as he has done for the past two years - This is a lot of work so do thank him when you see him at TICC.

I have been sending out the military spot announcements and press releases to citdies/towns around military bases located in New Mexico and West Texas. Also sent the press release to some American Legions, VFW and Elks lodges around military bases in Texas/New Mexico.

From Shirley Stateczny:

Sunday, Nancy Coultas was trying to put the awning down on their RV, and she fell and broke her wrist. (she was in Alpine) They had to airlift her to the Odessa hospital, where she had surgery for a compound fracture. She has to stay there for 3 days on antibiotics to make sure that she doesn’t get an infection in the bone. She is in quite a bit of pain today (Monday). I’m sure that she would appreciate e-mails and cards. Her e-mail is ncycoultas@aol.com.

I did talk to Nancy Yesterday. She is in a lot of pain. She sent Myrl back to Alpine. She is not up to phone calls yet. I will keep you posted.

Are you living in an area that is close enough to Terlingua that we can expect to attract some Public to come and join us and maybe judge? If so, and you do not have any of the small poster's that advertise TICC and you are willing to go from business to business and put them up on display, please contact John Goforth. He has about 125 of the samll posters left to distribute. These posters are not for personal copies, they are for distribution for advertisement!

From Kathy and Pual Mulkey:
Do you need that last point? Or are you just looking for a fun place to spend your weekend? Don't forget that there is a 2 day CCO at the Events Center in Hobbs, NM. On Friday night, there will be a Pot Luck with the meat provided. Then there are 2 days of chili cooking with GREAT prizes on Sun. If you are trying to see the article in the Indy Star, you must copy the entire address. Somehow the address does not connect when copied. The address is http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090923/LIVING07/909230304 You can not just click on the link, you must copy and paste.

NOTES from Janice:

At TICC, a discussion about initiating a Mentoring Team that would assist with Pods who are having trouble meeting all of the requirements outlined in our Bylaws, Article 13. If you are interested, please let me know. Right after TICC I will be identifying those members and assigning them to Pods. Our Pods in the for West and East are locations where some assistance might help. We will need to help them advertise CASI and try to help them attract cooks and for their CCOs as well as emcouraging new CASI members.

Speaking of Credentials, I want to take the time and space to say a special THANK YOU to the Credentials Committee for all their hard work and the quickness that we were able to complete the task of reviewing and sanctioning our Pods for the Great Pepper's Meeting. Thank you to Chairman Darin Jester, Committee Members: David Sexton, Mike Strack and Robbie Swart. You guys did a GREAT job and made my job so much easier.

Consider this idea for your Pod. How about having a Scholarship Chairman in your Pod? This person would help us get the word out about our Scholarship Program and review the applicants paperwork then forwarding it to our National Scholarship Program Administrator, Barbara Herrin. We have a good program and it just continues to get better.

I get requests every week for new CCOs and their need to have some assistance in planning a sanctioned CCO and then executing the plan. Most of them are fairly close to a pod, but lately I have had requests from regions where there are not only no pods, but there are no CASI members. One day this week, I had 3 inquires about establishing new CCOs and they were from 3 different regions of the Continental US. One was from Florida, one from Texas, and one from Arizona. To me, this is exciting that people are hearing about CASI and want to have sanctioned CCOs. This week, I also had a request from Montana. There aren't a lot of Chili Cooks up there. I worked with the girl to help her set up her CCO, but it was to late for it to be sanctioned, and I am not sure who I could find to volunteer to go into the cold land in the Oct/Nov timeframe and Referee this cookoff.

Here are some facts about our Membership as of Sep 12. We have a total of 984 paid Annual Members, 494 Life Members and 56 Corporate Members. Of these, the following are New Memberships in the Past 12 months: Annual 278, Life 15, and corporate 15. We have a lot of our Annual members who have not paid their dues. If everybody kept their dues paid, we would have increased our membership by 308. Many of you wait to see if you are qualified for TICC before you pay your dues. Our dues are very reasonable at $15. If you enjoy chili cooking, meeting new friends, and having a really good time, isn't it worth the price of a membership! If you have not paid your dues, take the time and send them to John Goforth this week. Help keep CASI strong!

We are leaving for Hobbs, NM today for the 2 day CCO off at their Event Center. This is a really fun CCO and you are even in walking distance to the Zia Casino! This may be the last post for the week. It will depend upon whether we have internet access tomorrow.

TICC NOTE: Remember if you or someone you know would like to have an invitation to Judge at TICC this year, please send the name and address to Renee Moore at rmoore@gulfshoresal.gov. We need judges!

Again this year at TICC on Saturday there will be a Photo Op for Past TICC winners. Also this year, there will be a Photo Op for Past CASI Board Members. Please if you are in one of those categories be prepared to be at the front of the stage just before announcements. We will need to do this quickly so that we can move on to the announcements.

Bill Pierson and his Illinois group will be serving chili to visitors who would like to taste some chili and are not going to be judges. This is being done by request of many of our visitors who say that they have attended the largest Terlingua International Chili Cookoff and left with out even a taste of chili. This will be a trial. Please save your extra chili for this group. Also, they will collect any leftover chili from this CCO.

Come on down for the first time or come on down for another time. RV sites available with full hookup - Cabins available also. From Ron Barnes:

A Tale of Two Cookoffs

I hope you will take the time to read this as it demonstrates what you can do if you find yourself at a cookoff with no hope of getting enough cooks to sanction it. It sure beat packing up and going home!

What a difference a day makes.

Saturday was a scheduled cookoff at the Dallas Heritage Village in Old City Park. This is a historical park with buildings circa 1880 – 1920 that are fully restored and authentic. We were set up on the brick Main Street next to a beautiful fountain and steps away from the historic downtown storefronts. They had a live band (Merry and the Mood Swings) and the Trinity River Desperados, a wild-west reenactment group with authentic clothing and a gun fight at high noon. Michelle Davis, Director of the Village and cookoff promoter, went to great lengths to make sure everything was in place for her first chili cookoff. We only had one problem…four CASI cooks showed up! Gary Brignon and Dr. Ray Calhoun also came, but since Doc was still chasing points we agreed they should head out to another event to try for those points. Not sure why we had such a small turnout, but it was what it was.

Michelle had gone to the trouble of lining up judges to come out and taste chili. The four of us (Roger Foltz, Sherree Duncan, Tina and I) decided to make the best of a bad situation. We scraped together as much chili as we could and managed to put 15 cups of chili on the judging table (half-full and combined as we could). This way, we made sure the folks that came out to taste chili had the opportunity. They all had a great time, said the chili was great, and looked forward to next year. They were curious, however, how there were so many cups of chili with so few cooks. When I explained what we had done, they were all appreciative. It was also the first time I ever placed 1st, 2nd and 4th at the same cookoff! Needless to say, I will not be expecting any points from this event!

To see photos from the Heritage Village event, go to http://sep192009chili.shutterfly.com.

Sunday brought the annual installment of the State Fair of Texas Cookoff. This year was a little different as it was held the weekend before the fair opens, instead of the opening weekend. Our turnout was down from 60-70 to 31. The cooks who came did receive free admission and parking passes to come back during the fair. I want to thank Doris Coats, Babs Johnson, my lovely bride Tina, Michael Burke and Dwayne Price for helping with table monitoring and tally.

Another group of people attending the Great Pepper's Meeting in Midland, TX

From Bill Pierson:

PALOS PARK IL—The 2009 Chili Year came to an end last Saturday at a new CASI cookoff in Palos Park. This was the first year that CASI was invited to participate in this event, and it was a well-received invitation. They had a beautiful venue, and the weather cooperated perfectly. We were advised that there would be a large crowd and, boy, were they right. We had plenty of throw-down and they when through it like a swarm of locust. Finding a new cookoff like this one looks like this one is like finding money in your pocket. Often, the end of year cookoffs have difficulty getting 15 cooks, but twenty cooks turned out which was very gratifying. No one wanted to enter showmanship, they were having too much fun cooking and partying. The winners:

At the Great Pepper's Meeting in Midland on September 12, Renee Moore Open the session with the following Message. I believe that this message should be shared with all of our membership.

Friday, September 18, 2009

From Bucky Seelig:
The special October issue of the Terlingua Trails has been posted on the CASI website. Please make sure you take the time to read the sponsor report compiled by Jim Ezell. Also, make sure to thank the sponsors when you see them. We all know that they have a choice when they dole out their sponsorship money, and Jim has done another outstanding job in directing them to CASI.

Also, see the events schedule for Friday’s “CASI Scholarship Day” and make sure to view the ad on Page 20 for the new CASI BBQ event which will be held on Thursday, November 5th, all benefiting the CASI Scholarship fund.

Also, there are gate policies, volunteer requests and other TICC information items listed in this issue.

From Barbara Herrin:
Are you interested in serving on the Scholarship Committee? If you are, please email me so that I can compile a list of possible committee members. My email address is herrinbarbara@aol.com.

If you know somebody who would like to be a judge at TICC, please send Renee Moore or me that information so that we can get invitations mailed to these folks.

It was decided at the Board of Director's meeting that was held before the Great Pepper's Meeting, that they price of beer sold at the main concession and at Krazy Flats would be increased to $2.50. The price of beer has not increased in over 6 years. We will also be selling beer by the case again. You don't have to load your Motor Home down with cases of beer. Plan to buy them from CASI after you arrive at TICC.

We are trying to set up a group of people who would like to help mentor some of our Pods who are having a hard time surviving. If you are interested in being a part of this group, please let me or Tim Collier know.

The weekend is here. Time is running out for getting points this chili year. It's this weekend or next weekend left to get enough points for the invitation to TICC. Here's hoping that all of you who are still chasing points, well have the Chili God smiling on you!

From Ed and Marolyn (Mayo) Blair:

2009 Great Peppers Meeting, Midland

To the Members of the Black Gold Pod and your volunteers

Congratulations on a job well done!!.....Hotel was great, Hospitality suites were up, running and fully stocked and of course very comfortable. The Yucca Theater was a new twist and the entertainment on Friday night was ... ENTERTAINING! We are still laughing. and taking small cautious steps. A big thanks to the Odessa Gang that cooked up a "Great Texas Meal."

As for the meeting, we heard old items, new issues and it left us with a lot to think about as how to move CASI forward to bigger and better times. With the Board election there is always the excitement for the new members and disappointment for others. Still, being an all volunteer organization means we get to all move forward at the same pay level, so let's do it and keep the faith of our motto Chili, Charity and Fun.

Again, a big thanks to our hosts. We look forward to see everyone at TICC.

From Big John and Blu Daniels:

As announced at GPM in Midland, Rose City Pod, Tyler, is proud to sponsor the goody bags for the Terlingua School students again this year. We are asking that everyone bring their excess goody bag items received over the past year from local cookoffs. We all get them and even pay early in order to get one, but we can only have so many pens, pencils, pads of paper etc.....so bring all that and the keychains, koozies, caps, t-shirts, rulers, all the stuff you don't want to throw away but don't need. They do not allow any item with a beer or liquor logo, understandably, but we gave out lots of military items, some backpacks, CD holders, no telling what all you get in them wonderful "cooks goody bags". And the Terlingua students are so appreciative of this gift. We send them back for every student with the high school kids that come out to entertain us on Friday morning....and that's when I am able to reclaim all kinds of room in our bus! Kubota Tractor is giving us all the bags to stuff. Last year we had 113 bags and they had 118 students, so we will be prepared with the bags, just need the stuff to put in them. Please do not bring used items that don't even belong in a garage sale!

Bring your items to Big John and Blu's big white bus, usually parked on the main road, next to the last sponsor camp space across from the Showmanship area. We will be assembling these on Thursday afternoon/evening so Friday afternoon will be too late. We also like to include all those little bottles of shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, body lotion you collect at the hotels. Thank you all so much for a great time at GPM, an excellent meeting and we'll see ya at the Ranch.

If you are not coming to Terlingua, please send your stuff with someone who is, if they would be willing to haul it for you. Also, Big John and Blu will be at the following cookoffs if you can bring or send to them - Sept. 26, Jacksonville; Oct. 3-4, Hallsville; Oct. 10, Chandler; and Oct. 24, Tyler Elks Lodge.

Thanks for helping get the word out!

From Ron Barnes:

Come on out Saturday, September 19th, to the Dallas Heritage Village for their 1st Ever Chili Cookoff. It is being held at Old City Park in Dallas. The actual address is 1515 S. Harwood (near the Dallas Farmers Market). If you are coming from the west, take the Lamar/Griffin exit off of I-30 and follow feeder road to the first light (Harwood). Then follow Harwood south until you reach Beaumont. Turn right on Beaumont and follow to Ervay. Turn right on Ervay and look for the delivery gate (there will be someone there to guide you). You will have to come in, unload your chili gear, then leave the area and park in the main parking lot. You will be allowed to return after the cookoff to load back up. Trust me; it will be worth the extra effort necessary. They also have a large indoor pavilion (climate-controlled) for registration and judging.

Dallas Heritage Village is a circa 1890 – 1910 village with many original buildings and artifacts from that era. There will also be a wild-west shootout on Main Street in the village! If you are any kind of history buff, or just want to see what things were like back in the day, this is the chance. It truly is an interesting place to see.

This is a grind-only event with a $20 entry and a 1:00 p.m. turn-in. Any questions can be directed to Michelle Davis at mdavis@dallasheritagevillage.org or me (Ron Barnes) at Ratchili@tx.rr.com. If you are having trouble the day of the event, call my cell at 817-691-2325. Looking forward to seeing you there!

From Mason Dixon Pod:

At the Great Pepper's Meeting we voted to have 3 New State Open Championships. Those Championships are New Mexico Men's Championship, New Mexico Women's Championship, and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico State Championship. San Miguel will be an International CCO!

The 2010 Great Pepper's Meeting will be held in Salado, TX at the StageCoach Inn. You can make your reservations by calling 254 947 5111 or 1-800 732 8994. Donna Conrad and the citizens from Salado gave a good presentation. It's going to be the "Place to be" next September!

Kansas requested to become a 12 point State. This is the first year with a Pod in Kansas! You Guys are doing GREAT! They will be having the Annual State Open Championship as well as a Men's and Women's Championship.

That's enough for today. The weather here is looking a lot like Fall. This makes me think it is really time to hit the road and go cook Chili!

From Ma Sue and Papa John:

You continue to amaze us with your emails and calls. We have to be the luckiest folks in the world. You havecalled and said you have an extra motorhome we can use until we are settled, you have offered to come and clean up,you have offered your love and condolences, stoves, chili pots and the list goes on and on.

When we received the call, we went back to our room and talked and talked. We decided that the best thing for us mentally was to stay at the GP Meeting and be with our chili family. This was a good decision.

Since our return, we have been on the phones withadjusters, estimators, etc. This is something only we can do, as they have asked not to touch anything until they okay it. In the meantime, we are calling for info, making inventories, getting prices. I even have asked my daughter and family to stay away as we don't have the time right now. We have to keep a constant vigil on this as there is much to list, all that purple and pink stuff in the motorhome.

And during all this turmoil, do not forget, we have our lst and 2nd Pts for Sight lst weekend in October at Giddy Ups. We need your help and support. Thank you all for your continued love and support. We couldn't ask for anything more. GOD BLESS US ALL AND GOD BLESS AMERICA. Mama Sue and Papa John

From Ken Rodd:

I would like to have many"volunteers" help distribute our TICC press releases to newspapers in your local area. Many cities, towns and communities have their main newspaper, but they also have those smaller type papers which often will place public service type news releases. If you will assist, email me at
casihotrodd@aol.com and I will send them to you. Below you will find a copy of that Press Release.

Do you know any of these people? They were found at the Great Pepper's Meeting!

Thanks Connie for the Picture

From Vicki Childress:

I failed to mention our Thursday Morning Breakfast at the Great Pepper's Meeting. I thought it was going to be a normal everyday time of chatting and getting prepared for the Board of Directors Meeting. We were having breakfast with John and Sue Caffey when John received the call from their neighbor. The neighbor gave John some very bad news. He related that their Pole Barn had caught fire and that when the flames got so high another neighbor had seen the fire and called the fire department. He related that it had taken everything in the Pole Barn to include their motorhome and tractors. I have communicated with Sue and know that at present they are still dealing with adjusters. As anybody who owns a motorhome knows, there is a lot of stuff that you keep in them and lots of those items are not replaceable. Sue and John - just know that there are a lot people thinking about you and will assist you if you need us but in the mean time there is not a lot we can do for you except to remember you in our prayers.

From Robert Schrade:

Thanks

WOW, what a great GP meeting. THANKS to everyone who worked so hard to make it so great. I would like to thank you all for your support on my election to the board. I will do my best and work hard for this great organization, CASI. I also want to thank Ken, Bucky, and Bill for all the hard work and what they have done in their time as CASI Directors. Also, congratulations to Dana & Jen on their election and John on his re-election. I know they are all hard workers and interested in the future of CASI. In closing, I again want to thank you all for your support and the e-mails and phone calls I received when I got home; they were great.

Thank you all,

Robert "EL WAPPO" Schrade

From Ken Rodd:

Hi,
I just returned from the Great Peppers Meeting. A new elected Director will be the new "Mayor of Krazy Flats" and that is Robert Schrade.

Robert is a member of the "Krazy Flats Charter Members" and is very familiar with Krazy Flats - He has done all the electrical work on the Saloon along with volunteering to help in the concession stand along with his wife Connie many times over the past several years.

I am sure Robert will continue to make Krazy Flats successful in supporting CASI and TICC.

Don Hoy is the Krazy Flats Coordinator along with help and support of his wife Dianna and this looks like a great working team going in to bigger and better things
