From Debbie Eiland Turner:

Times running out to be a part of the Cooks Register. This bi-annually published book is a part of chili history, having started in 1979. It is a list of chili and BBQ cooks from all groups. It is an invaluable tool since it lists not only names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses for the people, it has lists of regularly scheduled events, a calendar for the next two years, holiday dates, contact info for sanctioning organizations, Great Peppers and Regional referees and more. The name information is sorted by last name, but in the back are lists of cooks who purchased the book by team name, city and state along with lists of birthdays and anniversaries. The book is close to a "Who’s Who" of the chili world. Be a part of chili history, get in the book.

The original deadline was set up as August 1st so I could receive the information in time to get it processed and input in time to be published by Terlingua. Right now I’m out on the road and although someone is watching the house and occasionally forwarding mail, I will extend the deadline to the 10th to give more a chance to get in. If you did not receive an application form in the mail (or misplaced the one you received) just e-mail me and I’ll e-mail one to you.

Cost of the book and a listing is $20 (or $23 after Aug 10) or if you only want to be listed the cost is $2, payable to Goat Gap Gazette. Send to PO Box J, Waxahachie, TX 75168-0356. For info, goatgapgazette@sbcglobal.net. Am in the mountains and get spotty cell service, but you can try my cell phone 972-935-2402 or leave a message on my home phone 972-351-0022.

From Larry Burress:

NOTE:  Clifff and I ar flying out early Thursday Morning for MO to visit his mother.  We will have email and cell phone access.  Do not hesitate contacting me.  Hope to post on Friday.  Have a Great Weekend.

Hey gang. See attached for info on a really great CCO in Kemah. Last year’s CCO was a really grand time. This Elks Lodge put a lot of work into it, and they will again this year. And, if you come early, the Kemah Boardwalk is just a short drive away; always a fun time there. This is one CCO you don’t want to miss. From Larry Kinnison:
Many of our friends and pod members have asked me for Audrey's address, so that they can send a card to her. I'm sure she would appreciate your thoughts so much. Tom Cook introduced her to our chili world and I'm sure she has many memories as we all do.

NEW SPONSOR PROGRAM

Greetings CASI

As part of our continuing quest to improve program quality for CASI cooks, the Friends of CASI sponsors will band together to underwrite the cost of TICC awards. This group of sponsors will now be responsible for the cast metal TICC trophies, the TICC winner jackets, and a new award to be initiated this year: TICC winner chairs. These chairs will be embroidered with the place and category of the recipient and hopefully promote CASI and TICC to all who see them. In addition, all proceeds received over the cost of these items will be used toward a Friends of CASI Scholarship.

I am seeking additional participants for this group. Sponsor benefits will include:

Embroidered sponsor shirt
Recognition Plaque
Recognition on national CASI poster
Promotion on a special monthly page in the Terlingua Trails
Group photo with the TICC first place trophy
Introduction at GP meeting and all sponsor functions

Our goal is $12,000.00 annually. We are already over half way there and excited about the prospects. This group will be a support group for CASI and seek ways to recognize the winners. The cost to join is not prohibitive and you can see your dollars at work. You can join as a business, pod, individual, or group. This is a good and worthwhile opportunity.

Call or email me for details. I look forward to hearing from you.

From Lee Kroencke:
Just a quick reminder that this coming weekend, July 31st, and Aug 1st, are two dates to keep in mind for chili in the Kansas City area.

Outlaw Cigar South Chili Cook-off. http://www.outlawcigar.com/  Held at 13700 Metcalf, Overland Park KS. CASI Chili entry fee $20.00 with a noon turn-in. Home Style chili $15.00 with a 1 pm turn-in. Cook both competitions for $30.00. CHILI GRIND ONLY. We have been getting lots of inquiries about this cook-off, seems everyone has heard the word about the great events at Outlaw Cigar. In addition to a fantastic chili cook-off there is food, drinks and cigar specials featuring XIKAR and Jesus Fuego from 10am until 6pm. Also, this is a very special event due to the untimely death of Shawnee Kansas Firefighter John Glaser, the proceeds from the cook-off will now benefit the JOHN GLASER FOUNDATION.

John lost his life in the line of duty in a house fire on May 22, 2010. Firefighter Glaser left behind a wife and 2 children. John was a loving father and devoted husband.  His wife, Amber, who was his childhood sweetheart, released the following statement:
"John died doing something he loved. Knowing that, as well as the outpouring of support from the community, has been a tremendous help to us as we deal with his passing."

Glaser, 33, had decided to become a firefighter after 9/11. At his funeral service, fire chief Jeff Hudson said Glaser gave his life serving his community.

"John gave his life without hesitation while searching a home in very dangerous conditions because he thought someone was trapped in that burning home and he might be able to save them," he said.

Firefighters will also be on hand at the Chili Cook-off to sell shirts and raise additional monies for the foundation.

If you would like to donate but are unable to attend the cook-off, please contact Lee Kroencke at 913-754-6074, gladiatorchili@yahoo.com or Larry Velasquez 913-708-2118, larry.velasquez@forbo.com. COOKS - PLEASE MAKE EXTRA THROW DOWN CHILI TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR THE JOHN GLAZER FOUNDATION.

On Sunday, August 1st, at 9:00AM the Gladiator Chili Pod will have their annual meeting at the VFW Post #846 located at 8804 Grant Street, Overland Park, Kansas, 66212. Cooked to order breakfast is available from the Post for $6 per person, all you can eat. This meeting includes POD elections and 2010 business.

NOTE:  I have received 20 Annual Reports so far.  Thank you to all of you who have already sent in this report.  Remember that it is due to me no later than August 15.  I would also remind you that if you have something to include on the agenda for the Great Peppers Meeting and/or have a handout that you would like to have included in the packets for each Great Pepper, I need that by August 25.  I had put in the blog last week that I needed it by COB.  I had somebody who wasn't sure what that is, so I am sorry if I used abbreviations that are unfamiliar.  COB is Close of Business.

Also remember that I may not be able to blog on Friday or it will be later than usual.  We will leave here early on Thursday Morning to fly to Cliff's Mothers.  We will be there until August 9, if nothing changes our plans.  I will blog each day, but I can not tell you what time it will happen.

If you have not registered for the Great Pepper's Meeting, please take the time and do it now.  The paper work for this can be found on our web page (http://www.chili.org/).  It is in the Resource Center.

The Resource Center is where you can find our CASI Documents.  Little by little I am trying to get them all placed in the Resource Center so that everyone can easily find any of this information.  If you think that there should be something placed in there that is not there currently, please let me know.  This has been one of my projects for the last 2 years.

I am also still trying to get the History for each Pod.  It will be placed in the History Section located in CIS.  I have not received very many of those.  Help us perserve the History of your Pod which is the History of CASI.

NOTES:
The Terlingua Trails is Posted on CIS.  It looks really good!  Great job Dana.

If your information in CIS is not correct, please send me the updated information and I will update your record.  Many times we use this information to contact one of you only to find out that the phone numbers, email address, and home address are not correct.  This is specially important if you are the Great Pepper or the Regional Referee.

Remember:  Your annual report is due to me by COB 15 August.  This is also the deadline for submitting Nomination Applications for the CASI Board of Directors.  If you cannot find the email with this information, you can find it on our web page (http://www.chili.org/) in the Resource Center.  If you are planning on a presentation at the Great Pepper's Meeting, please send me your support material so that it can be included in the Great Pepper's Packet and so that I can post it and also send it to each Great Pepper so they can be prepared for this discussion and voting.  I need that information by COB August 25.  Thank you to those who have sent their information to me early.  It allows me to have it assembled with less last minute rush.

Just a personal note:  I have survived this last surgery which included taken bone from my hip and placing it on a wire and embedding it into my toe and foot.  I am not sure which hurts the worse.  My toe or my Hip.  I am getting stronger each day.  The stitches came out this week.  I have spent the last 2 days without taking any antibiotics.  This has not happened since February!  Thanks  to all of you for your patience, prayers, notes, etc to both of us.  We are not out of the woods yet, but it is better.  I am still very weak.  If all goes well and if my father stays stable, we plan to fly to MO next Thur and spend a week with Cliff's family.  I will still have email and cell phone service.  I will attempt to post the blog each day.  Those that have sent your annual report to me early are helping make this not such a stressful time.  Cliff certainly deserves this break.  He has been wonderful through out this entire ordeal with both my father and me.  THANKS Cliff - I love you!

There are lots of CCOs this weekend.  There surely is one in your neck of the woods.  I hope it isn't as hot where you are planning on cooking as it is here in West Texas.  Have a Great Chili Cooking Weekend.  Even if your are not cooking chili, try to stay cool and enjoy Summer.  It is fast coming to an end!  Happy Weekend!

From Jim Stateczny:
My staff has completed the modifications and the CIS is functional again.

From Erik Ackerson:
Imagine setting up your chili tent and fixins' just steps from the azure blue Caribbean Sea.

Imagine your toes in the sand as you look over a crowd of almost 6,000 tanned swimsuit wearing chili fans!

A cool tropical breeze blows through the surrounding palm trees as the music of Austin's own Van Wilk comes from the central stage.

You could be living this dream if you were to join us on Sunday August 22nd for the 26th Annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cookoff on Sunday August 22nd on beautiful St Thomas!

From Sammie Plant:
A little tip for GP's
GP's Please take time to get your registration into Dave for the GP meeting. From a former host you do not know how important this is for the planning of every thing connected to a successful meeting. We GP's all need to want this to be a success. This is a place where our voice can be heard. So get off your keister and get counted. YOU CAN MAKE a difference in success and show Donna how much we appreciate all she does for CASI.

See you there, SAMMIE PLANT

From Ralph Hay, Alcalde:
Attention Cooks and Old 320 Members alike – I need help in finding some missing Old 320 Members. Please get your eyes and ears open to see if you can help me locate these people. First – Mark and LaNell Beck, last known address was P.O. Box 61, Bedford Park, IL. Next is Linda Shaw – last known address is 8154 Surrey Cove, Cordova, TN.

The above is a perfect example of why I keep pressing everyone to get their Profiles completed and mailed back to me. These two people have moved from their last know address and their mail has come back to me as “Attempted – Not Known, Unable to Forward.” You may not be aware of the Procedure that states as follows – IN THE EVENT THE ALCALDE IS UNABLE TO LOCATE AN OLD 320 MEMBER AFER NOTIFICATION OF REGISTERED MAIL FOR THREE (3) YEARS,THEN THE OLD 320 SITE(S) REVERTS TO CASI.

Old 320 Members, It is quickly approaching the time to let me know if you will not be using your Site(s) and as in the past you want to give your permission for a Cook/cooks that do not have their own Site to use yours. If you want a Specific person to use your Site, please let me know A.S.A.P. Also, Great Peppers of Pods that are Site Holders, you are responsible to let me know who will be using your Pods’ Site(s).

See you at the Great Peppers Meeting.

From Doc Kinnison:
Our Great Pepper, Tom Cook, passed away this morning (Sunday). Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Will forward more information as we receive it.

If I get more information today, I will do a second post.

It's Friday and time to think about the weekend.  There is not much news, just lots of CCOs.  Just a few reminders:

-   Have you registered for the Great Pepper's Meeting?  Time is running out and we do not have all of the Great Pepper's registered or all the Pods represented.

-  If you are the Great Pepper, have you begun to fill out your Annual Report and get it returned to me?  Remember the due date is no later than August 15.

Hope you all have a good summener weekend.  You will need to stay where it is cool.  It is going to be hot in this part of Texas!

From Becky Allen:
The Texas Festivals and Events Association annual conference was kicked off in a grand way with a CASI CCO and Margarita Pour-Off during their kick-off party on Thursday, July 8 at Traders Village in Houston. 36 cooks turned out to show off their best for the festival organizers from across the state. From margaritas and chili, to show; the TFEA folks were impressed and still talking about the event several days later. The margaritas were a great ice-breaker for the evening, and with People’s Choice award up for grabs, an ideal way for the TFEA folks to meet all the CASI cooks. Congrats to Marolyn Blair who won not only People’s Choice, but also 1st place margaritas! Evidently she knows what to do with limes and tequila! This was a wonderful opportunity for CASI to show what they can do and it looks like some festivals will want to host a new CCO in the future. Thanks go to TFEA for asking Becky Allen to put together this event and Mike Baxter of Traders Village for hosting us at his facility. Also, thanks to all the CASI Directors who came out to support this CCO as well as several previous TICC winners. And we owe a huge thank-you to all those who helped with registration and the judging tables, especially Sherrie Davis for being Referee and Keith Karaff for serving as Head Judge. As the conference moves locations from year to year, we don’t know if we’ll get the opportunity to do this again, but if we do, we’ll certainly be ready!

Margarita Results – 14 margaritas
1st – Marolyn Blair
2nd – Dana Plocheck
3 – Susan Armand

People’s Choice – Marolyn Blair

Chili Results – 36 chilis
1st – Dana Plocheck
2nd – Becky Allen – Q’d
3rd – Pat Dozier
4th – Jo Quest
5th – Nancy Draper
6th – Doris Greenlees
7th – Phil Greenlees
8th – Vickie Hebert
9th – Phil Barnes
10th – Dave Pitts

Show Results
1st – Michael Mayorga – AYI MIJO
2nd – Becky Allen – The Buzzards Too
3rd – Julie Cooper – King Chili

From Jamie Burress:
The 27th Annual Purgatory Creek Pod Cookoff is Juy 17 & 18, 2010. It is one of the most laid back cookoffs of the year. We hope you will come cook chili, try our "new" event The Back Yard Chef, judge or just play in the river with us.

Cook's party Friday night, potluck dinner on Saturday and breakfast served both mornings. For information call 512-353-8895 or e-mail janieb@alertservices.com.  Hope to see you there.

Again from Mama Sue:

Hi folks, Mama Sue Here:

Got another one of those "situations" and need some hep. The Waterhole Saloon in DelValle has scheduled a Chili /BBQ cook off on July 17. It is up against the PCP Pod cook off in Staples. We are not trying to pit one against the other, all we're asking is that if you are not cooking at Staples, please come to Del Valle.

Ken Rodd is needing help running the cook off and needs cooks. John and I are in the charge of our Annual Caffey family reunion and we cannot help out at either one. Please help us if you can. Please call Ken if you can help him on Saturday 210-887-8827.

A Request for Help:
As you can see this is not a formal, regulation style chili cook off but rather just a fun time of fellowship for some of our church families. I was hoping that if there were no other events this same weekend that perhaps one of your certified judges could come and take part in our event and lend their expertise to our chili creations. I know that this might seem like an odd request but I really thought it might be fun to have someone who actually knows what they are doing, judging and offering tips during our event.

If you could, would it be possible for you to contact those in the Atlanta area (specifically the south side) who might be qualified and see if they would be interested in helping with our event?

I would greatly appreciate it.

Note:  Life is never dull at our house.  I think I will be glad to see 2010 come to a halt.  After Dinner last night Cliff thought he heard water running and asked me if I had left water running outdoors.  I said that it has been a full month since I have used a garden hose.  We opened the garage door to see that the hot water tank was leaking every where.  Guess What?  I am making lemonade today!

From Barbara Herrin:
LOST SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS

I am still looking for two of our scholarship students. They are Lauren McAdams and Luke Sotkovski. Both received scholarships beginning in 2008. I have no contact information for them and have not received their fall and spring grades. I need the grades and contact information to issue their checks for this fall. If anyone knows these students, please let me know ASAP.

From Jim Stateczny:
I have changed (simplified) the download procedure for the tally program. I realized that this version no longer requires the .net framework and so the download procedure can be streamlined. Now when you click on the reference a box will pop up asking if you want to run the program, or save it. Simply save it to your desktop and the icon will appear. Very simple.

GREAT PEPPER'S:
Remember that your Annual Report is due to me by August 15.  This is your ticket for attending the Great Pepper's meeting in Salado, TX on September 11.  If you or the Pod has an issue that you would like to have put on the agenda for this meeting, please contact me with the information.  If you have a handout for this meeting, please send it to me as soon as possible.  The Annual Credential Report is also located in the Resource Center on the CASI web page (http://www.chili.org/).  I have already received several of these reports.  Thanks to all of you who have sent your report in early.

Be a Candidate for the CASI Board:  Do you need some excitment in your life?  Are you looking for a job that is fun and rewarding?  Think about running for the CASI Board.  The nomination package is located in the Resource Center on the CASI web page (http://www.chili.org/).

Larry Burress remind you that the National Chili Cookoff will be held August 14 in Buda, TX.  See the flyer below.

If you have an article for the August Terlingua Trails please get it to Dana Plocheck by the evening of July 15 which is tomorrow!

From Dorathy Williams:
ATTENTION..
Reminder, if you plan on having a September cookoff, you only have 1 more days to send the information to me so that it will appear in the August Trails.
...don't miss out!

It is Wednesday and time to post the CCOs this weekend.  This week there are CCOs in 4 different States.  Hope you can find one that you want to attend!
