From Dave Hewlett:

Gil Hewlett had a left carotid artery surgery this morning, Thursday July 30. He is doing good and all went OK with no problems. Just one more zipper added to his collection.

It's Friday and the weekend is upon us. I hope each of you have a chance to cook chili and promote CASI! Remember the motto: "Chili, Charity, and Fun."

We are in the middle of MO and finally it is not raining!!! We drove through rain all day yesterday. Please continue to send me the information for the blog. I will be posting each day.

May the Chili God bless you this weekend!!!!

Thursday, July 30, 2009

There is not any news today, so this will be short. I will just remind everyone if you have not made reservations for the Great Pepper's Meeting, it is time to do so. The registration is due to Patsy Childress now. Your Pod report is due to me no later than Aug 15.

NOTE: Any Referee or Great Pepper who is planning or will plan to be at the Balloon Feast in Albuquerque, NM on the 3rd weekend in Oct and would be willing to referee and assist in a CCO, please contact me. There is a promoter that wants to have a CCO as part of the Fiesta and so far I have not found a referee available for that weekend.

Remember to enter your Pod Newsletter in the Newsletter Contest. For extra information, contact Roger Foltz.

We are in the middle of OK and we will head to for MO today. Of course it is raining! Enough for today! Have a Great Day!

From Sue and John Caffey:

Dear Chili Family,
We cannot possibly express in words, the outpouring of love that has been received since the passing of John's son, John Alan Caffey, on Sunday 26, 2009. We wish to thank you for your many calls, emails, and love, (and hugs from the ones still at Lone Star Carefree.) I know there are many of you who did not know Alan, but John and I thank you for all of this and it is endearing to us have that much love given back.

Alan will be cremated per his wishes. The family will have a private graveside service. There will possibly be a Memorial service later. Those wishing, please send your Memorials to CASI Scholarship Fund. Papa and I will continue to roll on knowing that everywhere we go, some of you will be there to hug us, love us, and make sure we are all right. That is the bestest Bouquet in the world. Please no flowers and no food. When you see us at the next cook off, we will drink a toast with our Papa. A very special thanks to the Caring Carefree Staff for their kindnesses. GOD BLESS US ALL AND GOD BLESS AMERICA. Mama Sue

From Charimaine Rogers:

I would like to let everyone know that I have not gone to England. If I had gone you all would have known, especially the folks we saw in Austin at Lone Star RV. Sorry for the scare but someone thinks its really funny to jack around with people. It has been reported to the necessary people. DO NOT answer any e-mails from chilimom50@hotmail.com any longer it will not be me. I will have a new e-mail in the future.

Thank you
Charmaine Rogers

NOTE: There was an email that was circulated yesterday that said that Charmaine was in England and needed money. Please do not respond to this email. As you see above, it is not really from her.

Here is the Flyer for the Spring Creek CCO.

Gil Hewlett is having surgery today. Please addd Gil to your prayer list.

From Ken Rodd:

Austin Lone Star RV Resort Weekend was a tremendous success with 66 cooks turning in Chili.

The cookoff went well, 66 cooks made reservations for next years Lone Star RV Resort Weekend - Carefree donated $250 to the CASI Scholarship Fund.

A new cook since Oct won the cookoff. We had a cook that stopped cooking chili in 1992 after 10 years of cooking, making a return to the chili world and attended. He was from Houston.

Tim Collier placed and beat his wife who placed also.

Connie Collier beat out Tim Collier for the cook that traveled the furthest - you can ask Tim how he lost this close race.

Lone Star Weekend is going to make a donation to the CASI Scholarship Fund in Memory of John Caffey's son and one in memory of Don Hoy's mother.

News is short today, in fact I did not receive anything to post. I do want to remind each of the Pods that to have a complete Annual Report, all of the officers (including Referees) must have their dues paid through 09/30 2010. This must be accomplished by the Report deadline which is August 15. Of the reports that I have already received, this seems to be the only problem which is keeping a pod from having their Credentials cleared for the Great Pepper's Meeting.

I want to remind anybody planning on attending the Great Pepper's Meeting in Midland that they need to have made reservations and sent in their registration to Patsy Childress. The Registration must be returned no later that August 17th. After that there will be a $15 late fee applied.

Application for a Board of Director Position should be submitted to Karen Bains by August 15. Consider being a Board of Director. The pay is GREAT and you have the satisfaction of helping an organization that you believe in and support. We need YOU and your ideas and assistance.

I want to once again remind each pod that is planning on participating in the Newspaper Contest to send need a copy of your July, August, & September Pod Newsletters to Roger Foltz. We have some wonderful newsletters that the pods are producing. I appreciate each of you sending me a copy of your newsletter. It really let's us know what it happening.

Enough for today. It is raining here. Yesterday in less than an hour we got 2". We need it and it saved me from helping Cliff cut the grass today. Have a GREAT DAY.

Trivia from Bill Pierson:

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the killing of John Dillinger, the FBI's first "Public Enemy No. 1." While Dillinger was born in Indiana, died in Chicago, he made his name in the central midwest robbing banks, there is a Texas connection.

In the spring of 1966, a group of UT grad students were "celebrating" one student's thesis presentation on the Thompson submachine gun. One of the group, a Dr. Horace Naismith claimed to be Dillinger's illegitimate son, and the "John Dillinger Died For You Society" was born.

Naismith's real name is Bill Helmar. He spent his career as a senior editor for Playboy Magazine in Chicago. He even parlayed his thesi into a book, :The Gun That Made The Twenties Roar." Helmar now lives in Bourne.

From Jim Ezell:
A lot of people drive with their tailgate down. From Mythbusters:

Aerodynamic studies show a pickup truck is most fuel efficient with its tailgate up. It seems the upright tailgate causes air flowing over the roof of the cab to collect as a stagnant "dome" in the cargo bed. As speed builds, this dome, which tapers in a teardrop shape near the tailgate, acts as an aerodynamic ramp that forces airflow over the tailgate, to the benefit of fuel efficiency.
Disrupt this flow by dropping or removing the tailgate, and air coming over the cab is left to swirl around in the cargo bed, degrading the truck's aerodynamics and hurting fuel economy.

NEWS FLASH:
We now have had our first TICC qualifier from South Dakota! Daryl Kunzi (a CASI member), cooking in NE and WY has qualified to cook at TICC this year.

From Bud Barrick:
Lots of discussion about Pod membership requirements these days. The New Mexico Chili Society is a very small pod. If it weren't for our friends in Texas we probably would not exist and if we did, we would struggle to attract a sufficient of cooks to conduct sanctioned CCOs.

The New Mexico Chili Society has completed our credentials for this year's GP meeting and on behalf of our Great Pepper I am proud to report that we have 32 paid members. All but two of these members live within 100 miles of our primary area of operation.

Speaking about Annual Reports: At the present time I have received 25 Annual Reports. Thanks to all of you who have sent them to me before the August 15th deadline.

From David Manske:

Suzie was released from Baylor Irving yesterday(Saturday). Two of her arteries are 100% blocked, at this time they will treat with medications. Also at this time they can not do a bypass or stints due to the damage, big words I will learn in the future I am sure. Anyway, between 2 heart attacks, diabetes, and her stroke back in 2000 everything has brought us to this.
As we find out more I will try to keep everyone up to date. Thanks for the e mail and calls. I know I am not giving out much information, but this is what I have for now.

A note from Jim Ezell:

The web site was misspelled. It is http://www.mexene.com/

Please visit it. (Editorial: I have added it to the Links)

From Bill Pierson:

The Pierson household has a reason to Party this weekend! Cheryl had her last chemo treatment today. We knew before today, but when she left, the Oncologist pronounced her CANCER FREE!

From Dave Hewlett:

Here are the details for the Ponderosa Nudist Camp CCO scheduled for Aug 15 – 16.

I suggested to Gayle that charging $20 for entry to the cooks for Friday was not a real good idea. She said she would talk to her boss but I suspect he is not going to change.

In summary, they have waived the $35/day entry fee for Sat and Sun for the cooks and one guest. The camping has been reduced to $17/night.

I suspect that is the best we can get at this time.

GP’s please forward to the members if you would.

Renee Moore announced as Alabama’s City Clerk of the Year!

By Dale Jones as reported on at Baldwin ountyNOW.com Saturday, July 11, 2009GULF SHORES, Ala.

"In many instances, the office of city clerk is the most detailed position in local politics. Serving the mayor, the council and working with the many different department heads, the city clerk serves a multitude of functions. While many view this position as the person who simply calls roll and keeps minutes at city council meetings, there is much more to the position than that.

Dealing with legal documents, helping to administer city contracts, and as the official keeper of city records, it takes a special person to do this job.

City Clerk Renee Moore is an important part of what goes on at City Hall in Gulf Shores, and for the second time she has been recognized for her hard work and dedication.

The Alabama Association of Municipal Clerks and Administrators annually recognizes a member of the organization whose accomplishments have made the most significant contribution to the AAMCA, to municipal government in Alabama, and to the clerk’s community municipality.

Recently, at the Association’s summer conference in Spanish Fort, Moore was announced as Alabama City Clerk of the Year. She won the award for the first time in 1999.

NOTE: I sent a copy of the minutes from the June Board of Director's Meeting to the Great Pepper's yesterday. It didn't include the attachments. Hopefully by Monday we will correct the problem and you will be able to view the minutes with the attachments on the CASI web page in the History section under Minutes -Board of Director's Meeting.

Have a GREAT CASI weekend. I am cooking this weekend for the first time in a month. I hope I have not forgotten how to make a pot of chili! Good Luck to each of you who are cooking this weekend.

From Jim Ezell:

I would like to encourage everyone to take a look at the Mexene Website.(
www.mexine.com ). They have a section devoted to CASI and a photo gallery from Terlingua. There are also great facts and definitions of various peppers and chili terms. It is very kind of this great sponsor to devote this attention to our organization. Be sure to thank them every chance you get.

Best Wishes

I have several scholarship recipients that appear to be lost. If you have any information about these people, please let me know. The following August CCOs are on Advertising Probation:

08/15/2009-007 Spring Creek-Victoria, TX
08/22/2009-006 1st Annual Canton Paw Park-Canton GA
08/30/2009-001 2nd Annual St Mary of Gostyn-Downers Grove IL

Please remember that you are to submit your CCO early enough that it will appear in the Terlingua Trails a full 30 days before the date of your CCO. This means that the above CCOs should have been submitted before June 15 so that they would have been advertised in the July Terlingua Trails.

Minutes from the June Board of Director's Meeting have been emailed to each Great Pepper. They will be posted on CIS in the History Section.

One of the actions taken during this Bof D meeting is a change to the application for a CCO. If you submit a request electronically, you will note that the default for the request for Terlingua Trails and Cup Tickets is now 0.

Bucky Seelig reported that parcel post costs, the cost associated with mailing boxes of Terlingua Trails to various cookoffs and people, have increased by about 20% from November to June. The average cost of a box of Terlingua Trails including printing, boxes and postage is about $10 per box. It was noted that if a cookoff asked for 2 boxes, our cost is $20 out of the $25 fee per cookoff that comes to CASI.

From Bill Pierson:

Shannon IL—Last Saturday's "Behind the Fence Chili Cookoff" is held in conjunction with the Illinois State Barbecue Championship, KCBS Style. The site is Shannon's Lions Park which is know as barbecue's "Field of Dreams." It really does remind one of the baseball movie, complete with ball diamond and cornfields. The last couple of years though, it has resembled the Everglades. There's nothing like driving an eight ton motorhome in a swamp to experience that sinking feeling. Fortunately, the rains subsided during the day and the ground firmed up so we could make it out of Shannon without a tow.

This was the eleventh year for this cookoff and has produced many fond memories over the years. Sometimes some barbecue team members cook chili with us, sometimes they don't. This year we had three from the BBQ side and two of them placed. One young man was really "into it" and we just might see him again.

I am doing a quick post today because it will be late tomorrow before I do another post.

From Tonya Jester:
Check out our new website… www.indianapepperpod.webs.com

It’s still under construction but some pages are complete. I am working on setting it up so your annual POD renewals can be done online and paid thru PayPal.
Also, I can set-up a ‘store’ if we have items to sell.

In order to use the blog, you will need to become a member – which the blog page works but is still somewhat under construction.

Since this is a free website, I am limited on what we can/cannot do. And also space.

NOTE: I will either post late tomorrow evening or again on Tuesday. I hope all of you have had a GREAT
Weekend. It has been extremely hot here in West Texas.

Saturday, July 11, 2009

I must correct Herb Ross' age. He will be 91 in Sept, but he still is the oldest to have ever qualified.

Friday, July 10, 2009

It's Friday and time to prepare for the weekend. If you want to cook chili this weekend, there are lots of places to chose from. I'm not sure you will need to use a stove to cook your chili if you are doing it in West Texas. At 105, I think you can probably cook your chili on the sidewalk.

Congratulations to Herb Ross. Last weekend he qualified for TICC. Herb is 98 and as far as we can tell, he is the oldest cook to have ever qualified for TICC. WAY TO GO HERB!

From Tonya Jester:
This next weekend, July 18th and 19th, Indianapolis is hosting back-to-back cookoffs…

Saturday, July 18 – Country Inn Chili and Ribs CCO
Sunday, July 19 – Indiana Pepper Pod Annual CCO

On Saturday, we will be hosting special guests…John Dillinger’s family and Carol Sissom, the author of “Banking with Dillinger” (
www.carolsissom.com). We might even convince them to cook or judge.

How did this come about, you ask…well, last night, we went to one of their book signings. Darin works with Mike Thompson (Dillinger’s nephew). Mike’s mom (Frances) is John’s sister.

After sitting and chatting for a while, we thought it would be a unique opportunity for all and invited Carol and the “Dillinger Gang” (as the family refers to themselves) to set-up a book signing at the cookoff.

For those of you who are not from around here and are wondering “why Dillinger?”, his homestead is in Mooresville, IN, about 6 miles straight down the road from the cookoff site.

I grew up in this area and the locals did not see Dillinger as “Public Enemy No. 1” but as a celebrity with a big heart.

NOTE: Thanks to all of the Pods that have already completed their annual report and have returned it to me. This is allowing me adequate time to process the information and make sure that your report is complete and you are ready to be seated at the Great Pepper's Meeting.

Have a GREAT WEEKEND. Cook lots of chili. May there be lots of winners. And above all, try to stay COOL.

From Elton & Norma Homesley
Once again Marathon hosted a wonderful Fourth of July double-header cookoff. The weather cooperated for the fourth year out of the five years these cookoffs have been held. We had low 90's for a short time on Saturday afternoon and then the clouds moved in and the temperature dropped into the 70's. Sunday remained in the 70's all day.

The Marathon community and the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department were great hosts and we appreciate all that they do. Daniel Eaton, MVFD Chief and his crew hosted a stew and burrito supper on Friday evening at the Marathon Motel & RV Park. Saturday night Craig Carter entertained at a dance at the Post and the MVFD provided shuttle service to and from town out to this wonderful park with its spring fed creek and big pecan trees.

Thirty four cooks showed up for each of the two cookoffs. The MVFD and Marathon Community Library along with Norma and I wish to thank them all for making the trip. A very large thank you to the Black Gold Pod and especially Dave Boone for all that was done to keep the cookoff on the proper track and making sure that everything ran smoothly, "It did!". It was great to see Ken Large come out for a visit on Saturday. A very special Thanks goes to Lloyd Goldwire for the two bronze trophies.

We would also like to extend recognition and acknowledge the four cooks we had participate from Marathon (five counting Norma). Another person to be recognized is Jim Stateczny who brought his B-B-Q pit over and cooked hot dogs and hamburgers both days for the crowd collecting donations of over $200 for the MVFD. Thanks Jim!

Most importantly, we wish to recognize Boomer Kingston for coming over to be our Emcee on Saturday and Marathon's very own Linda for doing the deed on Sunday. Boomer has now been our Emcee for all of the five years - A Big Superlative "Thank You! Boomer"...

2009 MO State CCO Info

Thanks to the many that have called about the 2009 MO State CCO and their indications of coming and wanting more info. Thru the means of this column maybe I can touch more people and you as the cook and reader might pass this along also.

The CCO will be held Saturday July 18th in the Moore Pavilion which is a Large Morton Metal Building with electricity / just off the Northeast Corner of the Lamar Square. We will share the Pavilion with the Area Farmers for part of the morning, they will be selling all those Fresh Farm Veggies, and the Amish settlement will be selling Home Made Bakery Goods. Merchants from the 4 state area have donated many large items for a Public Raffle & Silent Auction.

Several spoke of bringing a Motor Home, and if we had a RV Park and if they could cook beside their Motor Home. The answer being Yes / Yes / Yes.

I just came from a meeting with City Officials this evening and Motor Homes are more then welcome in the City RV Park. The RV Park is located in the Northwest corner of the 25 acre city park / easy access in and out. Electrical & Dump hook-ups are available or you can just pull in and park. The park also has spaces for Pull Behind Pop Ups and Tents. There is NO CHARGE for the use of the area, the only things the city ask for a donation of $10.00 if you stay over 2 days.

If you are coming and will be driving a Motor Home I DO NEED TO KNOW IN ADVANCE TO SCHEDULE PARKING FOR SATURDAY @ THE CCO. Motor Homes will be lined along the South & West Sides of the Moore Pavilion, you will have plenty of room / level asphalt paving / and electrical outlets. Motor Homes will enter the CCO from Poplar St. Anyone that does not have a pull behind and needs transportation while you are in Lamar it will be provided. As we will be on City Property and across the street from a Large Church QT all Alcoholic Beverages (as all good chili cooks do) and all Pets Must Be On A Leash. Health Department says we have to have Canopy's because of the Pigeons.

A large Cooks & Sponsor Appreciation Party will be held Friday Night @ JR's Northfork Ranch starting Mid Afternoon till ??? JR's ranch is located just about a mile North of our detail shop. Signs will point the way.

We would like for all that can attend to try and make it as every thing raised during this 3 days will go to The St. Mary's Catholic Church Rebuilding Fund. St Mary's was a 105 year old land mark that was destroyed by Arson set be a 19 year old kid on METH. Feel free to call for additional information, Dixie Johnson / 417 / 682 / 5432 or e-mail me @ jrj8@sbcglobal.net.

In addition to the above information about the Missouri State CCO:
Rosary will be recited Friday Night the 17th & Mass
will be offered for Russ Harriman on Saturday Night the 18th.

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

I just recieve the following note from Johyne Harriman:

Russ died yesterday afternoon. I believe he recognized that he received Last Rites and I was able to hold him as he left. Russ was surrounded by friends (as he always was). Please remember him in your prayers.

I want to give a BIG thanks to all of those pods who have already sent me their Annual Reports. I am getting them recorded and will contact each Great Pepper if I need more information. I am hoping by August 15, that every Pod has sent me their report and that they are all complete so that I will not have to use the Credentials Committee to determine any actions. If you need assistance or have questions, be sure to contact me.

Speaking of Committees, the CASI Bylaws identify 5 Special Committees whose purpose is to handle specific portions of CASI Business. Those 5 Committees are the Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Governance Committee, Public Relations Committee and the Events Committee. There are several other committees that have been appointed to assist the Board with other activities. There is the Rule Committee, Nominations Committee and the Credentials Committee. We thank those people who have volunteered their time to work on these committees. Those committees and their members can be found in the CIS system in the CASI Organization Groups.

It's already Wednesday and it is time for me to post the CCOs for this weekend. Note that there are several CCOs this weekend that are automatic qualifiers. Win one of those and it is a quick way to qualify for TICC which is just around the corner.
