From David Manske:
WOW.
Today I had the pleasure of helping one of our CASI sponsors. Ancira held their 6th annual employee chili cook off in Alvarado. 8 employees created their recipe, and 4 judges, me included found a clear winner. It was a very warm welcome I received, as they asked questions about CASI and our way of judging. The fun started when I explained the cup, as they were use to having their pots numbered. As the 8 turned in they also learned why the ticket was on the side of the cup. After the chili was judged, and tallied, in which was done by hand, old school. They all gathered around the show room to find out the winner. Before announcements, they all wanted to know about CASI. We talked about different cook offs and what we do. When they heard about their pavilion in Terlingua, I believe they were impressed. I found out afterwards, 1 Ancira employee was in the Virgin Islands and had attended their big cook off. He also said there were no motor homes, hmmm. Wonder why? To make this long story a little shorter, it was a very good day with our very good sponsor Ancira. If anyone hears of a sponsor wanting or needing a little help, give it freely and you will feel the thanks I did.
David Budda Manske

From Debbie Turner:
It is with great sadness that I report the death of an old chili friend and the 1981 Terlingua Champion, Bill "Ice Tea" Douglas of Austin, TX. His former cooking partner, Bob (Ranger Bob) Ritchey sent a link to a video and article reporting on this death. http://weareaustin.com/content/fulltext/?cid=38661.

Bill was the tour bus driver for Miley Cyrus when he had a heart attack while driving a production crew to their next concert stop. The bus overturned on a Virginia highway early Friday morning. Only one person aboard was treated for minor injuries. Miley Cyrus was not on the bus at the time.

I received the following from Donna Conrad.  I checked it out and also sent a card to our troops.

XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL
If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services.

How amazing it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one! It's free and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are behind them.

This takes about 0 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you. Please take the time and then pass it on for others to do. We can never say enough thank you's.

Thanks for taking to time to support our military!

From Blu Danials:
I received a phone call earlier from Bob Conley's daughter. Bob passed away this morning, Helen is not doing good at all, took them all quite by surprise. And he was between his doctors office and the emergency room, all at the same hospital. Daughter said they are going to funeral home tomorrow (Thursday) and she would notify me of any further arrangements. It will be a Memorial Service as Bob is going to be cremated.

This is so very sad for us as Big John and Bob had become best of friends over these past several years. Bob was quite the character and we'll all remember him as stealing firewood and his little motorized cooler cart in "Just For Fun" show.

This was the best way I knew to get it out to as many who knew him as possible. Mailing address is 9423 St. Croix Way, Mont Belvieu, Texas 77523.

I also got a second note from Blu that I am including:

My good friend Bob passed into the wild blue yonder. He was a bit grouchy at times, but I loved to be with him at Terlingua. He stole firewood, and griped about the speeding on the road in front of the camp. I will always have the memories of the the good times we had together. The last time I talked to him, his phone was going dead, and he said to me "I'll talk to you later." That is an old Military saying, Never say goodby, only I'll see you later. Bob, I will.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and concerns for my father.  He required the insertion on 3 stints in the arteries leading to his heart.  He did well for a man that is 86 years old, but is still in the hospital.  We expect to get to bring him home today.  Thanks again.  Janice

http://www.chili-usa.com/TICCSAT2009

The cooks can go to that address and download the winner pictures full size so they can take them to Sams and have printed.

I will leave them up on the site for an extended period of time to allow for download.
There were over 2000 photos taken during the week.

From Robert (Wappo) Schrade:
Congratulations to Margaret Nadeau, 2009 TICC Champion. This my first year as Director and new Mayor of Krazy Flats was a learning experience. I want to thank Don & Dianna Hoy for their hard work and patience in teaching me the ins and outs of Krazy Flats. Also, a big thanks goes out to Raymond & Pat Pilchiek for their hard work and teaching along with Sammy Plant and all the others that jumped in and helped this year. How about Bruce Smith and the band that played a lot of great music during the days at the saloon? THANKS, please come back each year, you are much appreciated. Now, you are sometimes lucky enough to have someone volunteer to help out and go above and beyond the call of duty. This year we were lucky enough to have Roger Pate come down with Don & Dianna and work, yes work hard and nonstop. We had to make him take a break. He was constantly doing something - cleaning, working the saloon, or running to get ice. From all of the Krazy Flats folks and myself as director our hats are off to Roger, and a big THANK YOU. There are lots of hours of work put in to running TICC and Krazy Flats and I want to thank all who worked this year and hope to see you there next year. Also, at the Flats we had what looks like a very good year and we were able to raise some funds for the CASI scholarship Program with the stove raffle.

Thanks again to all,
Robert "EL WAPPO" Schrade

From Dana Plocheck:

The December Terlingua Trails is posted on the CASI Chili Web Site.

I would like to thank Bucky for all his help and support on getting this issue ready for publication. He has been a wonderful mentor with all the training, communication and time he has given to prepare me for this task. Thank you, Bucky!! I appreciate all the help.

From Mama Sue Caffey:
Pflugerville Pfall Pfestival was once again a very great time. We served over 6,000 samples of chili for People's Choice Awards. Thanks for everyone that came, cooked, helped in and every way to make this another successful event. Special kudos to Helen and Bob Conley for coming the distance and also bringing their son Jim and his friend Cay Ann. They all came back Sunday to the Green Red Barn.... And so did our Cibolo friends, Scott, Chrstine, and Andrew Knight.  Thanks to all who came. Thanks for the good cook's party Friday night, Warren, Scot, Matye, Chris, and most especially, little Miss Natalie, who captured my heart in two seconds.

A big sweet hug to Sasquatch for coming to cook both days and bringing me flowers on Sunday morning. I reached for my vase inside and then remembered I had none, so I used Papa's big peanut container. Keep smiling everyone. Life is precious and so are all of you. GOD BLESS US ALL AND GOD BLESS AMERICA.
Mama Sue Caffey

From Johnye Harriman:
I have quite a few Contestant and Official CASI shirts from years past (1990s on) and a few shirts from other cookoffs, such as Texas Men's Open and Chilympiad, that I would like to place in the hands of people who will wear them. Some of these have never been worn, although they are freshly laundered. I also have five year's worth of Directors' shirts that were Russ' and mine that are not being worn and should be put to much better use than hanging in my closet (I'm picking the embroidered names off). The catch? Most are men's mediums, some are men's small. The cotton Directors' shirts run large, so even the smalls are huge on me. I also have a few jackets that should be worn and a brand-new SW Open ball cap. If you are interested in receiving a list of what is available or if you want a specific year's shirt, please email to rhjhshow@aol.com. I'm still compiling the list (and doing laundry), but I'll get back with you as soon as I can. I would ask that postage be paid; otherwise, the shirts are up for grabs.

From Dorothy Williams:
There are no cookoffs on advertising probation this month.

You all did good!!!!

From Ken Rodd:

From Tonya Jester:
Ok, now that Terlingua is behind us, the next Chili Party is in Indiana. Come up and enjoy a great CCO, and ring in the New Year with your chili family. This is an indoor, closed to the public, private CASI chili cookoff. This event will be hosted by the Indiana Pepper Pod and held at the Country Inn and Suites. Special room rate of $79.00, with an entry fee of $35.00. Tables and chairs provided, dinner and a special adult toasting beverage at midnight. Please RSVP to Darin flashoverchili@sbcglobal.net 317-319-4961 or Tonya crazyladychili@sbcglobal.net 317-319-4962. We need to get a confirmed head count for the food and tables. So, if you are planning on coming please let us know as soon as possible. For hotel room reservations call the hotel at 317-821-1100 and use the code word "chili" for the special rate. The Hotel/Cookoff site is only 10 min from the airport and there is a free hotel shuttle. What a great way to ring in 2010...chili, good friends, and a great time! By the way, the winner's room will be comp'ed by the hotel - an even better reason to come!

Hope to see ya'll in Indiana!

From Darin Jester:

On behalf of the Indiana Pepper Pod, the Officers would like to express our gratitude to all who helped with the salsa event this year at TICC. Scholarship Day would not be a success if it wasn't for our Sponsors, the cooks, and all of the volunteers. Thanks again to everyone who helped out.

From Dave Hewlett:

WPIFF Winners for Stop, Drop, and Roll

From Janice:
I had a request for information about TICC from Amsterdam.  I emailed them information.  Baudien van der Ham and Dennis van der Ham were flying to Houston, renting a car and coming to see Big Bend.  On Thursday evening, they came to see what was happening.  They spent a couple of hours with Cliff and myself.  We took them to Krazy Flats and then to the main stage area.  They were able to meet a lot of people and really had a great time.  They told us that they were really impressed by the friendliness of everybody!  Thanks to all of you who took the time to visit with them.

I also had another set of visitors that wanted to observe the festivities and see what CASI is all about.  Again they related how impressed they were with the friendliness of the people and the excitement that was filling the air.  This just proves what we say about our members.  They are the friendliest and most exciting people that you will ever find anywhere.  CASI members are just the BEST.

What a nice surprise for John and Sue Caffey upon getting the replacement for their jackets that they lost in their MotorHome fire.  Thanks to everyone who helped make that happen.
