From Jennifer Sherfield:

NOTE:  Ken Peach, Washington State, Puget Pod, recently sent me an email about the problems that they are having with the Washington State Health department.  Below is part of his email where he explains their problem.  I am aware that Arizona is having some of the same problems.  This will be a discussion item during our Friday Meetings at the Great Pepper's Meeting.  Hopefully a discussion can help them figure some viable answers to help these pods.

"There are probably others who might want to know this also but we are having problems up here with the Health Department. Washington State is like a lot of states with not enough money to cover the budget so the Health Department is raising fees very, very high. I just got a call from one of the Inspectors in the county where we are going Sat to the CCO at Black Diamond (old coal mining town, small but quaint and very nice). She said on a blanket permit (and stupid me, I always thought the word blanket meant everyone) we can only have four cooks and the cost is $182; and $182 for four more and so on. Oh, it is not a CASI CCO yet, although the people said if we can get a lot of cooks it will be OK to add the CASI next year along with the homestyle. I am not sure it will happen if they enforce the rules: We cannot buy the meat before the event; it cannot be cutup at our homes or at the chili site. It can only be cutup in an approved facility; i.e., restaurant, butcher shop, grocery store having a butcher shop, etc. Also the vegetables have to be washed in an approved facility and our homes are not it. There are lots more rules; some new and some we already knew about but have ways to get around them. OK, all of that info for the info I need from the GP's; how do other Pods make money for the charities other than sampling and auctions? We have a 12 percent unemployment rate and that is the reason we can't get a lot of regular cooks or new ones to come to the events anymore."

I invite any of you that have ideas for Ken, please send them to me and we share the information and also we can be prepared to share during the GPM.

It is Friday and time to think Chili.  As we go about our weekend activities, please keep those individuals and their families who are living in Aurora, CO and have been effected by the lasted killings in your prayers.  This is home for me and I still have many friends, my children's friends and their families still living in the Aurora, CO community.

Happy Weekend.  Remember Chili, Charity and Fun!

Are you planning on attending the Great Pepper's Meeting in Dallas on September 7 and 8?  If so, have you made your reservations at the Hotel and sent to Bill Pierson your Registration?  If you have not done this, please do so right away so we can get a count and make plans.

"The Great Pepper or authorized alternate pod officer (alternates being Pepper Popper, Secretary, Treasurer, or the incoming officers of same) shall attend the annual Great Peppers Meeting. Only one pod representative can vote and/or represent the pod proxy at the annual CASI Great Peppers Meeting. No one person may have more than one vote at any CASI meeting."

From Ken Rodd:

I have 12 reservations for the U.S Open for Friday August 10th leaving August 12th for people staying at Austin Lone Star RV Resort. I have a few cabins left, but all the deluxe cabins are reserved. There is one semi deluxe left. A couple of rustic left.

There are some RV sites left - if you want one or think you do better reserve TODAY- we are a busy park and most weekends we are full so a last minute reservation probably won't be available.

Call ME on my cell if you want a reservation. We serve breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning for $2.50 and the pool is FREE!

August 5th is the Indiana Pepper Pod, Pod Cookoff and annual meeting. Both cookoffs will be held at the Country Inn and Suites located 5630 Flight School Dr. We will also be holding our Pod Officer elections on the 5th at our Pod Cookoff.  The Country Inn and Suites are offering discounted rooms, just give them a call (317-821-1100) and let them know you are in for the cookoff, to receive the $79.00 rate. Hope to see ya there!

NOTE:  Thanks to all the Pods who have sent in their Annual Credential Report already.  I have 15.  Remember that August 15 is the deadline.  Also, remember that all Pod Officers (Great Pepper, Pepper Popper, Secretary, Treasure, and all Referees) must have their dues paid to September 30, 2013.

On that same note, if your delegate or other CASI members are planning on attending the Great Pepper's Meeting in Dallas, on September7 and 8, and have not sent in your registration, please do so.  This will allow for planning of the events.  You can find the Registration Form on the Web Page (www.chili.org) in the Resource Center.

Friday is going to be a full day of events.  It will start with a quick CASI Board of Directors meeting.  There will then be some breakout sessions.  Again this year we plan to have a session on Monitoring and Refereeing.  There will also be a session on the plans for the CASI Museum, the Health Department Issues that many of the states are imposing upon our cooks and cookoffs, Candidates' Roundtable, Happy Hour and much more.  Saturday will be the Great Pepper's Meeting.

If you have anything that you would like to have placed in the Great Peppers' material for this meeting, please send it to me as soon as possible.

You still have time to decide to run for a CASI Board of Directors' position.  The nomination packages are also in the Resource Center.  There are 4 Directors' positions and the Executive Director's position.  The Scholarship Program Administrator Position will also be filled.

It's finally Friday and it is Summer.  Time to get out and have a good time.  Maybe this weekend you will get those last few points that your need!  Have a GREAT weekend!
