From
Dave Hewlett:
June
23rd, 2012 Garland Texas.
What an event full weekend. It
started as a great Garland ELKs CCO on June 23rd with 39
great CASI CHILI cooks coming to aid us in putting on a great show for
the Liontv
company. The Liontv company had called me a week ago and asked if they could
come out to
CASI CCO and bring 2 of their hosts to cook. They were David Fung and Andrew
Fung.
Seems these
2 hosts live in Los Angeles, CA but are from Asia and were
brothers who wanted to experience American food and not fast food. They wanted
to come and cook chili and learn all about our favorite hobby. Tom Dozer
supplied the cooking supplies and spices for one brother and Nancy Hewlett
supplied the
others. Tom assisted the one cook and Roger Foltz the other in learning
and cooking the chili. In the head to head judging event of the 2 chilies
Nancy’s
spices won
out but in the normal CASI judging process the spices and cook assisted by
Tom Dozer
won out. Yes they both used “Mild Bills Spices” and both made final
table.
We also had
a single head to head judging event where the 2 Liontv hosts chili were
judged
against each other by our 4 CASI TICC world champion chili cooks. These 2 hosts being
brothers made the event even more fun.
Jim Ezell
(CASI BOD) provided the
interface with the Liontv company and gathered together 4 of our
past TICC champion cooks, Roger Foltz, Tom Dozer, Doris Coats and Bob
Coats.
Included also was Gil Hewlett who had won the 2012 Southwest Open CCO in
Durant. The “CASI Renegades” chili cooking team lead the way setting up
their pop ups in a
long row and displayed the signs of our many great CASI sponsors. The
“Renegades team” is led by Tom Dozer, of course. By the way the temp was
around 99 to 100 and it was hot.
The Garland
Elks hosted the event and provided the Judges and the judging area. We were also
honored by Judge Horn from Hunt County cooking and judging chili. As always
the Elks were a great host. The Garland Elks Lodge #1984 host 5-6 CCO’s each
year and
they are a “Friends Of CASI” member.
We did have
a bean cooking event and Renee Griffin won beating Nancy Hewlett who
got second
place. Tim Wardlaw won 1st place chili both days. He said he would
return next
year.
The event
video will appear on YouTube on July 2nd. You can scan for the name
“Hungry” and
“Liontv” to find the video. I will post in the CASI BLOG the details as
they become
available. Liontv web site is http://www.liontv.com/Usa/Home, if one
would like to
review the many great videos they produce.
