From Jim Ezell:
Please welcome Jon Reese, Texoma Ice as a new Friend of CASI Sponsor. Jon has secured the ice concession for CASI at Terlingua this year at a tremendous savings. Additionally, he is shipping us two ice merchandisers to take the load off our storage demands at Krazy Flats and the Ancira Pavilion. It is always great to deal with a CASI member when crunch time hits us. Everyone give Jon a big thank you.
PS: He cooks some great chili and could very well be onstage Saturday.
From Ella Slaton-Havard Fitzbag:

Annual North Texas Firefighters Chili Cook-off, Whitewright
Chili cookers are invited to compete for the best chili’s in north Texas. The venue is downtown Whitewright, Texas, on November 5th.  This is a fundraiser for north Texas volunteer fire departments who enter the competition.

Pre-registration is recommended. It helps with space planning and the first fifteen registrants receive gifts. Anyone can compete. So far there are boy scouts, VFDs, company-sponsored employees, locals, and people from Austin, McKinney and Conroe.

There are 14 awards: 1st -10th place, three Showmanship awards and one People’s Choice. The People’s Choice winner is determined by the public who purchase $5 tickets to sample the chili’s and vote for their favorite. Each award comes with a prize. Judges are needed; experience not required.

There are other things to see, do and eat on that day. The cook-off is part of the Grand Street Fall Festival, a family event. Raffle tickets for a Ruger .22 rifle and an iPad2 will be for sale in the cook-off area, and are for sale now through the phone number and email address below, at Whitewright at City Hall and the Chamber Visitors Center. There will be an auction and drawings throughout the day. Girls and boys can meet firefighters, learn about safety, what to do in case of an emergency and what firefighters do in addition to fighting fires. A nearby opry will have a bluegrass concert in the evening.

The cook-off is sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International. A CASI volunteer referee will oversee the event to ensure fairness in judging and sensitivity to safety. As with any competition – like football, quilting and fishing – it is critical to understand the rules and judging criteria to avoid disqualification.

The venue is open-air, no electricity, cooks must bring a cooking stove or stand and cooking gas. For registration, rules, judging criteria, schedule and directions: contact (903) 818.9023 chili@whitewright.org; www.grandstreetfallfestival.com  Rules and judging criteria also available at www.chili.org. $20 registration fee. RV parking is close, five eateries in town. Call for info.
