CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR THE KIDS IN TERLINGUA

It's time to start thinking about what to take to Terlingua with you and I have a few things that I would like to remind you to not forget to take with you. Christmas presents for the children of Terlingua. These presents are for the girls and boys age 12 and under. If you would please bring them unwrapped, but we could also use some wrapping paper. If you are unaware of how this works it's like this they give all the school children a present and then if they have stuff left over they send presents home to the children that are to small to attend school. I know that times are hard for everyone but just giving a child a toy could mean the world to them. I know that no one would want any child not to get a present at Christmas. Just think of how one of your children or grand children or a family members child would feel left out at Christmas. Everyone has a soft spot in their heart for a child so let your heart talk to you about bringing toys to Terlingua. Just take them to the concession area where you buy T-Shirts to Dorothy or to the judging area. ALSO PLEASE REMIND ALL OF YOUR FRIEND TO BRING TOYS TO.

Speech given to the Great pepper's and members by Renee Moore, President of CASI

On behalf of Debbie and Steve Ashman, J.D. and Lisa Dugan, Mike Park, Joe Trigo, and Randy and me, we give you our heartfelt thanks for the emails, texts, phone calls, posts and prayers during this trying time of the Bastrop Complex Fire.  The outpouring has been unbelievable.  We have all been extremely fortunate in that we’ve suffered no personal losses while so many have.

To see firsthand the assistance to the area from so many avenues is truly unbelievable.  It’s a shame it takes a disaster and adversity to bring out the best in everyone.  It seems when everything is going good, we’re not as tolerant or patient and sometimes become apathetic.

What is apathy?  It is the absence of interest or enthusiasm for things generally considered interesting or moving; a lack of enthusiasm.

I witnessed apathy this year as it came to the CASI Board election.  We have four very talented individuals who stepped up to run for the Board.  I applaud them but also wonder why our membership has no more interest in the organization.  If apathy is allowed, our organization is in trouble!

I’ve had several pessimistic members tell me that CASI will never see its’ 50^th Anniversary.  I sincerely hope that is not the case.   Arthur Gordon said, “Some people confuse acceptance with apathy, but there’s all the difference in the world.  Apathy fails to distinguish between what can and what cannot be helped; acceptance makes that distinction.  Apathy paralyzes the will to action; acceptance frees it by relieving it of impossible burdens”. 

Let’s put apathy aside and work for the good of the organization.

I have heard much talk over the years particularly when individuals become disgruntled with actions of the Board.  The most often heard comment is “the Board needs to run TICC, which is their only job”.  Article 5 of the ByLaws states, The Board of Directors is responsible for providing direction for the affairs of the organization.  This responsibility will include the organization and promotion of the annual CASI Terlingua International Chili Championship”.

The Board is not perfect; mistakes are made which is part of life.  Criticism isn’t all bad, but please, try to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.  Never look down on someone unless you’re helping them up.  Your Board needs and wants your input and assistance.

I have enjoyed my 11 years on the Board and leave knowing I’ve tried to do the best for the membership that I’ve served.  Despite comments to the contrary, your Board does get along and are not in open warfare.  There is no shouting, cursing, or pointing of fingers.  The Board is composed of a diverse group of passionate people with minds of their own.  Not one can be accused of not listening to everyone’s comments, even if they disagree.  As each of you are allowed a vote, so, too, are each of the Board members.  They have been elected to serve you and do so to the best of their ability.  The Board is united and will remain so.

I would like to thank all those Board members with whom I served during the last 11 years.  They are all extraordinary people who only want the best for CASI.  Thank you to all who have stepped up to assist when I asked.  I could never name you all, but you are truly appreciated.  And last, but certainly not least, a special thanks to Randy.  He shared me with this organization and allowed me to serve.   He saw the laughter, the tears, the frustration, and yes, even sometimes the anger.

Thank you all for being a very special part of my life.

Attached is the fall/winter promotion for Mexene. This is one of the things I discussed when I was in Lafayette last month. The hope was to use 5 of our CASI champions on these displays, but they decided on this one. This is fantastic coverage for CASI as this will go out to grocery stores nationwide and sit it the aisles. 2500 of these displays is a lot of exposure for us. Once again, thank Bruce Foods for all they do for CASI. Janice, you might want to run that picture in your blog and tell folks to watch for it in their grocery store and remember always ask for Mexene and CASA Fiesta on the shelf.

Hey folks, don't miss out on the chili cookoffs to be held in downtown Hico on October 1st and 2nd.  Hico is famousfor their Annual Texas Steak Cookoff and not they will have another feather in their hat (Cowboy hat, that is) - The Billy the Kid Chili Cookoff! 

The turn-in for beans will be at 11 am and there is $100 riding on 1st place!  Chili turn-in is scheduled for 2 pm.  And from 2 - 4 pm judges will be making their rounds to picl a winner in the People's Choice Chili,  C'mon pardner, get ready - this one has a $200 bounty for the chili voted as 1st place People's Choice!! 

Don't run off - there will be a chili cookoff on Sunday, October 2nd too!  Turn-in is 1 pm.  So bring your sleepin' duds and stay awhile.  There's room for RVs or you can kick off your boots at one of the local Bed and Breakfasts or hotels.

I am participating in the Bike MS: Alamo Ride to the River October 15th and 16th. I will be riding between 130 and 160 miles to fulfill a personal challenge and to help the National MS Society fund research and advocate for change and help people with MS and their families lead powerful lives.

I was diagnosed with MS in June of 2000. They have come a long way since I was diagnosed in the research thanks to the support of people like yourself, but we still have a ways to go. Multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease that affects people in many different ways. It could be paralysis one day, loss of vision the next or impaired memory the day after that.

The Society organizes 100 rides nationwide. The funds they raise fuel research aimed at treating and eventually curing MS; they also provide crucial services for persons living with MS.

Living with MS means living with uncertainty and I truly appreciate the support and encouragement I receive from my friends and family.

At our monthly meeting at the Garland Elks Lodge tonight I asked that we (Elks) have a toy drive for the children in Terlingua. They are all really excited about helping us out. They are asking the Poker players to donate a toy at their Wednesday and Friday night games. Also at the shuffleboard games Monday and Tuesday night. The Bass Club and the Alpine Dancers have also been asked to join in. And of course all of our members. The goal of the Elks Lodge is 300 toys for Bill and I, Dave and Nancy Hewlett and Mossman to take to Terlingua for the kids.


When I left the Lodge tonight I already had 25 toys promised by one great lady. And if I know her, she will double that number before the drive is over. She is going to ask some of the other Elks Lodges in our area to donate toys also. I was almost in tears when I left there tonight. For those that wanted to donate cash she has agreed to go shopping and buy wrapping paper for us to take also.


This should be a great Christmas for the children in Terlingua!!!

Looking Forward

Thank you to everyone that supported my running for the Board and to the Board for their confidence to elect me president. I am honored and will strive to live up to the standards set by all the presidents that have preceded me. Having served on the Board for a number of years, many have given me guidance. As for our outgoing president
Renee Moore, thanks for the mentoring you have given both to date and in the future when the need arises.

Chili cooks generally have a step up and get it done work ethic, CASI members especially. Let's work together to build on the accomplishments we as a Chili Family have made and grow our organization to even greater heights. As projects are identified, I am counting on the membership to step up to work on them. For you newer cooks, jump up and volunteer. There is no better way to get involved and meet people. As we went around during the Candidate and Board Forum this year, your Great Peppers have asked that we as a
Board work with the Membership to improve CASI. Let's do it!

As for communications, everyone -- it is a two way street. Let's share ideas, brain storm them and find winning solutions to the challenges ahead.

For our current Board members that are retiring, I personally wish to thank each of you for sharing your time, energy and ideas. Dorathy Williams and Renee Moore - more than a decade of service to CASI as Board Members. John Goforth, your time has been shorter, but your heart is just as big. As with most retiring Board Members, we know you are going to stay active within the Chili World and thank you for
your services to come.

For the new Board, I look forward to working with all of you.

I am getting a list of helpers for gate at TICC. I do not have a list of people that have previously worked the gate, or I would have contacted you personally. I would appreciate any help from Wednesday, November 2nd thru Saturday November 4th. We need two helpers for each shift. Shifts are from 8:00 am to 12:00, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, 8:00 pm to midnight. Saturday is 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Our position at the gate is to help answer any questions and to welcome the cooks and guest to TICC. Carrie and I have worked the gate for about 10 years, and looked forward to help. If you haven't worked the gate, it is fun to greet the cooks and guest. Please contact me at drk@tstar.net, or 830-613-8666 to reserve your time. The Corsicana CCO planned for Oct 8 has been cancelled due to the fires and the current fire danger.  It will be rescheduled.  Please continue to watch for these cancellations since the fire danger is Texas is so high at this time.

Would you or do you know somebody who would like to direct the Highway Cleanup on Wednesday at TICC.  We need somebody to step and and volunteer to be the contact person.  We are responsible for this cleanup each year.  It is part of the "Adopt a Highway" program.  Please email me if you can volunteer for this position at garjans@suddenlink.net.
