From Ruby Ross:

As most of you know who are on Facebook the EMS took Herb to St David's South in Austin Wed afternoon. He had stroke symptoms..not being able to walk, slurred speech, and very dehydrated. We spent 7 hours in the emergency room before they could get a room for him. He was very combative and completely 'out of it'. After Cat scans, blood, chest xrays, we still didn't know for sure what was going on. They started giving him Saline IV's and he was much better this morning. He was able to get out of bed and walk 4-5 steps with the therapist. We are hoping this will be a daily routine so we can get him walking on his own as before. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. Keep them coming our way. I will be posting daily on his recovery. We love you guys! Herb and  Ruby

From Larry Wampler:
Again this year the Willis Point CCO is planned for August 4, 2012.  It will be held at the  Pondaros Resort – the Friendliest Nudist Club in Texas.  Clothes are optional. Hope to see you there.

NOTE:  We will be leaving this morning for Dallas and the CASI Board of Directors meeting.  It will be at the Irving Elks.  We will start our meeting at 8:00 AM Saturday morning.  Here's hoping everybody has a great weekend.  It is still very hot and dry in West Texas.  Pray for rain!  Have a great weekend.  My post may be late on Monday since we will not return home until then.

From Dave Hewlett:
June 23rd, 2012 Garland Texas.
What an event full weekend. It started as a great Garland ELKs CCO on June 23rd with 39 great CASI CHILI cooks coming to aid us in putting on a great show for the Liontv company. The Liontv company had called me a week ago and asked if they could come out to CASI CCO and bring 2 of their hosts to cook. They were David Fung and Andrew Fung.

Seems these 2 hosts live in Los Angeles, CA but are from Asia and were brothers who wanted to experience American food and not fast food. They wanted to come and cook chili and learn all about our favorite hobby. Tom Dozer supplied the cooking supplies and spices for one brother and Nancy Hewlett supplied the others. Tom assisted the one cook and Roger Foltz the other in learning and cooking the chili. In the head to head judging event of the 2 chilies Nancy’s
spices won out but in the normal CASI judging process the spices and cook assisted by Tom Dozer won out. Yes they both used “Mild Bills Spices” and both made final table.

We also had a single head to head judging event where the 2 Liontv hosts chili were judged against each other by our 4 CASI TICC world champion chili cooks. These 2 hosts being brothers made the event even more fun.

Jim Ezell (CASI BOD) provided the interface with the Liontv company and gathered together 4 of our past TICC champion cooks, Roger Foltz, Tom Dozer, Doris Coats and Bob Coats. Included also was Gil Hewlett who had won the 2012 Southwest Open CCO in Durant. The “CASI Renegades” chili cooking team lead the way setting up their pop ups in a long row and displayed the signs of our many great CASI sponsors. The “Renegades team” is led by Tom Dozer, of course. By the way the temp was around 99 to 100 and it was hot.

The Garland Elks hosted the event and provided the Judges and the judging area. We were also honored by Judge Horn from Hunt County cooking and judging chili. As always the Elks were a great host. The Garland Elks Lodge #1984 host 5-6 CCO’s each year and they are a “Friends Of CASI” member.

We did have a bean cooking event and Renee Griffin won beating Nancy Hewlett who got second place. Tim Wardlaw won 1st place chili both days. He said he would return next year.
The event video will appear on YouTube on July 2nd. You can scan for the name “Hungry” and “Liontv” to find the video. I will post in the CASI BLOG the details as they become available. Liontv web site is http://www.liontv.com/Usa/Home, if one would like to review the many great videos they produce.

Scholarship Recipient Reminder

It is now June and the end of the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters.  Please remember that scholarship recipients will need to send me a copy of your grades for those two semesters so that I can ascertain whether or not they are eligible to receive funds for the Fall 2012 semester.  Please get those grades to me by June 15th.  We plan to mail the fall checks by August 15th if possible, but that will not happen if I do not have the recipient’s grades.

From Robert McDonnell Invite to attend the Burk Falls, Ontario Canada Chili Cookoff Event:
Friends and Chiliheads
Please be advised that the sponsorship for the first ever, annual, Almaguin / Muskoka / Nippissing Regional Chili Cookoff has been approved by the Almaguin Lions Club and will be taking place on the weekend of August 11th to 13th of this year.
This is a CASI ( Chili Appreciation Society International) sanctioned cookoff and although our best efforts may only award points, we are hoping for a special dispensation that might see our champion advance to the CASI Terlingua International Championship Chili Cookoff in Terlingua Texas this year. Participation by former cookoff contesants may be a deciding factor and the reason that your participation is critical to the success of this first kick-at-the-cat.
This will be a weekend-long event that will include a weekend pass to the accompanying Burk's Falls Country and Bluegrass music festival (see attachments) and an invitation to camp out on the Burk's Falls Agricultural Grounds for a modest entry fee ($45.00 for the whole shebang - cookoff, festival, et al).
Please also be advised that the winning team will have their name engraved on the Robert "Lone Star Bobby" Murie Memorial Chili Bowl which will be presented by one, or both, of his sons Scotty and Chris.
I realize that this is short notice, however, I have seen our Chili Canucks rise to the occasion more than once and I would ask that you support this effort.
Please respond or send any questions to myself surefire@onlink.net or Cookoff Chief Organizer Peter Hall peterhall@bell.net and hopefully we may answer any questions that you might have.

Regional Referees: Please send me the name of the referee that you have assigned to each CCO as soon as you can ahead of the CCO.  Jenny Windsor and I are trying to resolve some of the problems that we have had this past year with the referee assigned to a CCO.  We will document that referee in CIS once that person has been assigned and then we will know who to contact if there are problems with the Results Package.  It will also be away to identify more than one CCO in the same area and may be a way to alert the Regional Referee that we need to make contact with a promoter and work with them to change the date.

It's WEDNESDAY and time to post the CCOs for this weekend.  Summer is here!  It's time to get out and do some CASI Cooking.  Here are your places from which you may choose.

From Larry Burruss:
June 14, 2012

Greetings CASI Members,
After  some in depth soul searching I have decided to announce my candidacy for a position on the Board of Directors of CASI.
My involvement in the chili world  dates back to September of 1970 and the first ever Men's State Chili Championship  in San Marcos, Texas (AKA Chilympiad).  I remained involved  with Chilympiad until  2003 when it faded into the sunset.
During the mid to late 1980's I was elected Executive Director  for 2 years and then elected to the Board for a 3 year term  where I served as president for two years.
After a seeming lack of interest   at the Great Peppers Meeting last year to serve on the Board I began to think about once again serving CASI.
I am retired at this time  and will be able to devote the necessary time that is involved in being on the CASI Board.
I feel that my prior service to CASI and continued involvement throughout the years could be a benefit to help CASI raise funds and promote chili.
I am seeking your consideration and support. Thank you,
Larry Burruss Great Pepper Purgatory Creek Pod

Have a wonderful weekend.  Stay Cool!  It is definitely Summer in West Texas.

2nd Posting for Thursday June 14 (Flag Day):

I just received a message that  and old time chili cookClyde “Griff” Griffin, from Meadow Lakes, TX, passed away last night.  Keep his family in your prayers.
From Barbara Herrin:
Scholarship Recipient Reminder

It is now June and the end of the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters.  Please remember that scholarship recipients will need to send me a copy of your grades for those two semesters so that I can ascertain whether or not they are eligible to receive funds for the Fall 2012 semester.  Please get those grades to me by June 15th.  We plan to mail the fall checks by August 15th if possible, but that will not happen if I do not have the recipient’s grades.

From Larry Burruss:

From Richard Hewlett:
To Janice Miller, Executive Director of CASI, and to the Great Peppers,
This notice serves as my announcement of intention to run for the CASI Board of Directors. I have been a regular attendee at Terlingua for several years, and I am very dedicated to chili and charity. More importantly, my background offers many of the attributes that I feel will strengthen CASI when I am elected to the Board.
My career includes management success in 8 different fields; supplier programming, procurement, program management, product, systems engineering, electrical engineering, quality, avionics, and marketing.
However the most important thing that I bring to the table is neutrality; I have been successful over the years by avoiding excessive politics and staying focused on the business at hand. I feel I am a good listener and am known to work smarter and not harder.
CASI is something that is very special in my life. I am seeking this position to serve the organization that I believe very strongly in, and to support all of you by making CASI stronger for the future.
I thank each of you for your consideration, and if elected I promise to serve to grow CASI on your behalf.

Regards,
Richard Hewlett

2nd Post for Wednesday:
I just received a phone call telling me that Dodie Simpson's house was struck bu lightening last night and burned to the ground.  She is fine, but her dog KK did not survive. Her cell phone still works.  Please keep her in your prayers as she struggles with the death of KK and picks up the pieces.
From Dana Plocheck
Friday, June 15th, is the deadline to submit your articles, ads and/or pictures for the July issue of the Trails. Due to a conflict in my schedule this month if you could submit your information early it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would like to remind everyone to please send pictures as an attachment. It is very hard for me to work with the pictures if they are embedded in an email. Thank you.

NOTE:  If you plan on attending the Great Pepper's Meeting and have not sent in your registration or made hotel reservations, please do it now.  The Great Pepper's Committee is trying to plan and need a good number for this planning.
