From Ed Blair:

A reminder to the GPs to seek input from their Pods about whether CASI should host a Friday meal at the 2012 GPM.

Great Peppers' Meeting 2012 - Opinions Sought.

The 2012 Great Peppers' Meeting will begin an era of CASI organizing and funding the meetings. During our Committee Report, the idea of a Hosted Friday Night Dinner was raised.

In the past, some Pods raised funds and paid for this effectively as their gift to the participants. If a dinner is not included on the schedule, we would stock the Hospitality Room with food and snacks anticipating more folks dining on the fare.

The pros of having a meal would be to allow folks to sit and mingle over a relaxing meal. We would arrange for people to get random seating so that we are more likely to sit with folks we don’t know. This way we meet new friends and share ideas from various regions of the country, instead of falling into the habit of sitting with our closest friends.

Since we are having the meeting so close to the DFW Airport to reduce travel time and costs for folks flying to the meeting, it means many won't rent cars. As such, having a nice community meal at the hotel means they don't have to scramble to find a good meal.

While there are a number of restaurants within short driving distance, there is only the Denny's within walking distance, other than the hotel's restaurant.

The cons are; this meal would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000 depending on the meal choice and the number attending. If these funds were "saved" then CASI could fund almost a full extra scholarship.

Planning a Friday meal also means it would be harder for folks to find time to get out to local restaurants and enjoy the local cuisine.

We ask that the Great Peppers discuss this with the members of your Pods and provide us feedback. Please email your input to Adrienne Grant at adrienneg@gmail.com.  She will accumulate them for consideration by the GPM Committee. In order to allow adequate time to get the memberships input, we are not asking for a response until October 19th.

From Dana Plocheck:

The October Trails is available for viewing on the CASI website – www.chili.org.

This is a BIG ISSUE; 40 pages filled with lots of information about TICC, requests for volunteers, pictures from GP meeting and entertaining articles.

A special thank you goes out to Dave and Nancy Hewlett and Georgeann McNichols for all their help. Enjoy!

Top of Texas Pod and Irving Elks Lodge of Irving, Texas

Supporting CASI

A first for CASI

At present, the TOT Pod is the only CASI Pod to have the honor of having two Past Exulted Rulers as members and active cooks. Mike and Jennifer Moore are both PER’s of the Irving Elks and active members of the TOT Pod. Mike recently won his first cook-off and is hooked on cooking CASI. Jennifer and Mike are in their first year of cooking and are doing well in competing with the best.

Irving Elks Lodge #2334 is a friend of CASI sponsor and host the TOT Pod event. TOT also holds their monthly meeting at the Irving Lodge. In addition to the TOT Cookoff the Lodge also holds a cook-off for Elks charities. The support of the Irving Elks of TOT and CASI is a key element in the success of chili in North Texas.

CASI is very fortunate to have the support of the Elks around the country.

An outstanding Kansas State Womens's and Men's Cook-off was held in the pouring rain at Farlington, Kansas. No spirits were dampened however and the results are below.

Thanks to Kevin and Marlene Smith, along with the Friends of Crawford County State Park for a most memorable two days of Chili, Charity, and Fun! Thanks also to Mannie Mendoza of Blue Haven Pools, for funding the winners jackets, along with Kevin Stovall, and Larry Velasquez for cooking some excellent food for the cooks party. As you can see below, the Sunflower Pod let their presence be known. Thanks to everyone for making this such a wonderful event.

On Thursday, the Krazy Flats Charter Members breakfast starts at 8 am to kick off the day, followed by the 3rd annual Tequila Rose Bar-B-que cookoff. Anyone can enter the Bar-B-Que cookoff.

Friday and Saturday, there will be loads of fun at the saloon and store. We want ya'll to come on down have a lot of fun.

Don't forget to purchase a souvenir from the Krazy Flats store. This year folks bring your plastic (credit cards) because you can use your card to purchase all items at the store and the saloon. To use your card, your purchase must be at least $10.00.

I want to give a big thanks and hats off to Don & Dianne Hoy for the countless hours they spend working for Krazy Flats during TICC and throughout the year to make Krazy Flats a more enjoyable experience for you. Please remember to give them a thank you. I want to also thank all the folks who come down and work at Krazy Flats. Without ya'll helping, it would be impossible to keep Krazy flats going. Thanks again.

On a personal note, Connie and I would like to thank all of you for your calls, letters and e-mails supporting me during my current medical condition. It truly touches our hearts and it shows again that CHILI COOKS are the BEST folks!

I will be having cervical surgery on October 6 and will be out of commission for 6-8 weeks. I did ask the doctor if I could go to TICC and he said NO (lol). The doctors don't think like I do (lol).  You should have seen the look Connie gave me for asking.  I am in trouble again, huh (lol). I want to thank my wife, Connie, for taking care of me and being by my side all these years and insisting that I do what the doctors say. So in closing, we will not be at TICC 2011, but wish all of you a safe trip to and from TICC.  Good luck to everyone.

Connie and I look forward to seeing you all this next season on the chili trail (as soon as the docs say so) and serving CASI. Also, a thanks to the Board Of Directors for helping me fulfill my duties in my absence. When you see a Director, tell em thanks. That goes a long ways as they work for you. Speak to them and remember they are also just chili cooks just the same as you.

Thanks and much love to all,

Wappo and Connie
