T.I.T.S. Historian needs help.

Jimmy Maturo will not be at TICC this year. He asked me to find someone to cover for him. He needs someone to put out a plastic table cloth for signing along with some pens; then to pick it up at the end of the meeting and save it for him. I have the pens and the table covering; just need someone to step up and assume responsibility for handling his request for assistance.

Deer Safety on the way to TICC

It is Deer season and now is the time to remind drivers of the dangers of animals in the roadway! The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that 1.5 million accidents a year occur involving deer with an annual cost of $1.1 billion in vehicular damage cost. Deer are struck in three out of four accidents involving animals. Cattle, horses, dogs and bear also led to fatalities in collisions. Crashes with deer are most likely to occur in late fall during deer breeding, migration and hunting season. Accidents with deer are likely to occur on rural roads with a speed limit of 55 mph or higher, in darkness and at dusk or dawn. In 60% of the accidents involving human fatalities with animal-vehicle collisions, the fatality was caused not by the collision with the deer, but failure to wear a safety belt. The animal/vehicle collision is the first event and often not the deadliest. Often, the cause of the fatality, is what occurs with the vehicle, after the initial collision; i.e. striking a fixed object or another vehicle(s). There is no feasible way to keep deer and other animals off of the roadway. Deer whistles have been sold over the years as a way of avoiding deer collisions. I can personally attest that the whistles work; however, it is still up to the deer what action is taken after hearing the whistle. This may include standing still in the roadway or running directly at you. Therefore, drivers need to be vigilant at all times and especially in those areas that are prone to animal crossing.

As a professional driver you can decrease your exposure to injury or death in a collision with animals by practicing the following:

1. Be especially alert for animals on the roadway during dusk, dawn and darkness.
2. Wear your safety belt at all times.
3. Reduce your speed at night and do not overdrive your headlights.
4. Make sure that all items inside of your cab are secure and would not be a flying object hazard in the event of an accident.
5. Drive with your high beams on during darkness- when no other oncoming vehicles present.
6. Pay specific attention to areas where animal warning signs have been placed along the roadway.
7. If you see an animal in the roadway, lay on the horn with a long steady blast to frighten the animal.
8. If a collision with an animal is unavoidable, stay in your lane and DO NOT swerve. By an erratic maneuver you risk rolling the vehicle or losing control and striking another vehicle or fixed object.

NOTE:  One more person has qualified for TICC which makes 471 qualified.  This is 2 more than the previous record!!!

Cliff and I will be leaving on Thursday afternoon for TICC (actually for Crane to cook and then to Terlingua).  I will do the posting from home on Thursday and then I will post on Friday .  I am to have the ability to post from Terlingua once we arrive, so I will post the information that I get.  I can not guarantee  the time of day that these posts will occur, but if there is new information, it will be posted.  Please watch for updates!

From Jim Ezell:
We need to remind everyone to come to TICC prepared to take boxes back to everyone in their area. I have four pallets of new boxes with logos on them. That is several thousand dollars worth of advertising.

From Bruce Pinnell:
The CASI Ranch will have limited WiFi Service again this year. The service will be available from Oct 28th to Nov 6th 24 hours per day. The signal will be broadcast from three (3) locations and should reach most of the ranch. The cost will be $5/day or $20 for the whole event. It will be offered on first come, first served basis. The service will be limited the 100 users.

To access the internet, select the ‘Rancho CASI’ network from your laptop. Then, open your internet browser, select your plan (daily vs. weekly) and enter your credit card info on the secure web page. That’s it.

Because the service uses relatively low capacity internet circuits (the fastest available in the area), we need you to know about some restrictions before you sign up. These restrictions are necessary to allow more people to have access to basic internet services. The following uses will not be allowed, except in an emergency: Large updates from Microsoft, Adobe or Apple websites, video streaming from web cams, or recorded TV (Hulu), audio streaming from TV or radio stations, or video intensive gaming. There is no restriction for normal email and web browsing activities. There will be several websites that have free access. These include the CASI website, major sponsor websites, the Weather Channel, and others that may be added for public safety reasons.

If you have questions about the service, please contact Bruce Pinnell at 210.372.0469.

Fire Extinguisher Inspection

By Darin P. Jester

If you have a fire extinguisher then you should be checking it on your own each month to ensure your unit is in working order. It is also a good idea to have it checked out once a year by a company licensed to perform a more extensive inspection.

Spending a few minutes every month could save you a lifetime of heartache so follow these steps below to ensure that your fire extinguisher is in perfect working order.

Steps to Performing a monthly inspection for your fire extinguisher:

  1. Schedule your inspection at the same time every month. Keep a calendar with a big red X on the date of each month. Generally, you should have one person perform the task each time while another looks on for reference. Have a checklist handy with the date of each fire extinguisher inspection and follow each step until complete. Be sure to mark the date of inspection on the inspection tag of your fire extinguisher.
  2. Your extinguisher should not be blocked by any anything like coats or objects that may interfere with the access in case of an emergency. Make sure if the fire extinguisher is in your motor home or camper, it is easily accessible and not in a cabinet or under a seat.
  3. Always check to ensure that the pressure of the fire extinguisher is at the recommended level by checking the gauge to confirm that the needle is in the green zone which will show that the pressure is right where it should be.
  4. Make sure the nozzle or other parts of the extinguisher are not obstructed in any way.
  5. If your portable fire extinguishers have a pin and tamper seal, check to see if they are intact and undamaged.
  6. Check for dents, rust, leaks or any sign of abuse or wear. Take a damp rag and wipe off any gunk or dirt that may have accumulated on the extinguisher.
  7. It has been recommended by some manufacturers to shake your extinguisher once a month to prevent the powder from settling to the bottom.
  8. Every few years your fire extinguisher should be pressure tested by a licensed service center to ensure the cylinder is safe to use. Your owner’s manual or inspection tag should inform you when yours may need this test. If you cannot find the tag, and your extinguisher is more than 6 years old, you might want to replace it.  Several hardware stores, Wal-Mart and RV/Camper retailers sale them.
  9. If you notice that your fire extinguisher has become damaged or is in need of a complete recharging, it should be replaced immediately.
  10. VERY IMPORTANT: Immediately after using your fire extinguisher (no matter how much), be sure to replace the extinguisher or have the fire extinguisher recharged to ensure that it will be ready in the event of another fire.

From Sharon Pinnell:

It is Friday!!!  It is almost time to be leaving for TICC.  If you are cooking this weekend, have a great time and hopefully get a point!  I had a call this week from a couple who had spend the weekend in Alpine.  They reported to me that it is VERY DRY down there and that Alpine has strict fire ban regulations.  Please pray for rain!!!  West Texas is still very dry!
