From Rex Jones:
Frank Gadberry was talking to his wife Saturday morning and got up to go brush his teeth. When he got back, she was sitting in the chair dead. The funeral will be Monday, I think. Her name was Faye Crabtree and the service will be in Waxahachie. She and Frank were married 50 some years ago, got a divorce, remarried or took up after the second divorce.
That is the reason for the name difference. I will let you know anything further.

July 26, 2011

Subject:  CASI Newsletter Contest

TO:  Great Peppers
        POD Newsletter Editors

I am pleased to announce there will be a CASI Newsletter Contest this year.  The TOP 3 winners will be presented a nice trophy from the stage at TICC on Saturday.

I highly encourage your POD to submit your newsletter for consideration.  A newsletter for the purpose of this contest is:  "A document containing information for POD members that is sent to the POD membership by email or the U.S. Postal Service". If your POD has not had a newsletter - this would be a good time to "create" one.  FACEBOOK and WEB SITES are good means of communicating with members, but a POD newsletter is the basic communication for ALL your members.

The contest rules are as follows:

  1.  A POD may submit from one to three newsletters published during 2011.  The deadline for entries is September 20th.

  2.  Entries will be sent to Ken Rodd either by email - casihotrodd@aol.com or postal mail to:  Ken Rodd, 7009 S IH-35, Austin, TX 78744

  3.  The newsletters will be judged by 6 judges from various parts of the USA.  Judges do not know who the other judges are.

We look forward to a lot of entries in this year's Newsletter Contest.  We know you are doing good work out there - let us recognize you and your POD for what you do!!!!

If you have any questions please email me or call me on my cell phone.

PROPOSED RULE CHANGES:
Remember that this is the year to propose a rule change.  The form was in the email package sent to each Great Pepper and there is a copy in the Resource Center.  If you need for me to email you a copy, please send me your request.

It's FRIDAY!!!.  Cliff and I will be leaving later this morning.  We are going to Missouri to visit Cliff's Mom and family.  We will return home on August 8.  I will be doing the blog each day, but it may not always be at the same time.  I can be reached by email or my cell phone.

If you are cooking this weekend, here's hoping it will be a nice day, cool weather and that you have good luck.  We are on day 64 of 100 degrees or over for this year.  It is day 25 straight in a row.  No rain in sight!!!  Keep praying for rain for West Texas!!!

From Janie Burruss:

The Purgatory Creek Pod Cook-off was a big success. We had 42 cooks on Saturday and 34 on Sunday at the Geronimo VFW Post. We wish to thank everyone that attended, cooked, judged, monitored, tallied, etc. Thanks to those that donated to the cook-off and silent auction. It is because of this generosity that the cook-offs will be able to make donations to the charities. Four cooks qualified during the two days and several others moved closed to this goal. The results for both cook-offs were posted previously, but we wanted to thank each and everyone for their contributions.

From Larry Burruss:
The U. S. National Open Chili Championship is quickly approaching. Your paid entry must be posted marked by August 1st in order to receive the cook’s gift. We have ordered a COOL front for the weekend, so make your plans now to join us. It would be great to quailfy the top 5 cooks for TICC this year. Contact Larry Burruss at 512-353-8895 for more information.

From Lee Kroencke:
It's finally here!
The cook-off people have talked about in these parts all year long - the 2011 Outlaw Cigar Chili Championship. We have a Wendall Rankin hand painted stove being raffled (see photo and flyer) - it's beautiful, and of course there is also the full throttle Outlaw Cigar Party. Need we say more?
Cooks will begin setting up their tables at 8:00 am. Outlaw Cigar opens at 9:00am.  For more information go to www.chili.org and click on UPCOMING COOKOFFS.
And for general information about the Outlaw Cigar Company, go to Kendall's website at www.outlawcigar.com
Join us on Saturday July 30th for the party at the Outlaw South with Ernesto Perez-Carillo of EPC and Manuel Quesada with MATASA. Great deals on all these fine cigars as well as free food and drinks. Huge Outlaw Raffle with tons of great prizes as well as the poker tournament at 5PM. Dont miss out.
If you are bringing an RV or camper, please contact Larry Velasquez. larry.velasquez@forbo.com or call 913 708 2118. Jim Lilleston and our gracious friends at the VFW Post 846 have offered space to camp (very llimited hookups). Also, Hillsdale Lake is minutes away with plenty of hook-ups. Gladiators Fred and Julie Wiedner are camp hosts there and Larry will get you squared away whichever site is best for you.
Chili, Charity, and loads of fun this Saturday, July 30, at Outlaw Cigar Company South,
13700 Metcalf, Overland Park KS.
Of course whether you cook or not, you'll want to come out for the charity, Operation Payback, supporting our troops overseas.
See you Saturday!
Stay Thirst My Friends...

From Bill Pierson:
Well, well, well, it has been another interesting week of discussions among CASI members. I do believe that open discussions on various issues that affect CASI members, as long as they don't get personal, are healthy for the organization. It is encouraging to hear from the many voices of CASI. I can assure you, that while they don't participate in the discussions, the Directors are listening.

There are a couple of things I would like to clear up from my blog post of last week. I want to be perfectly clear, I did not say that pod newsletters were insignificant. As a former newsletter editor and publisher, I am extremely aware of the effort it takes to produce a document your pod members want to read month after month. As a past Great Pepper, I am also very cognizant of the importance of a newsletter to the pod's success.

What I did say, was that the newsletter contest was insignificant. It has nothing to do with the quality of the entries (they were very deserving), but with the quantity of entries. When only two out of 71 pods choose to enter the contest, they deem it insignificant. In baseball, a .333 batting average is considered good, not great, good. If we had 24 pods enter the contest, it would be so much more meaningful.

Many people mentioned the "cancellation" of the newsletter contest. The contest was not canceled. Unlike TICC or the GPM, the newsletter contest is not a recurring event. It takes, each year, an action by the Board to have a contest. This year the Board apparently (I was not at the meeting) chose not to take the action. Based on the participation, I would agree with that non-action.

Several writers mentioned canceling the contest "in the middle of the season." Does that mean to say they would not have had newsletters if they knew earlier there would be no contest? I hope not.

This discussion has been good for the organization. Members should feel free, and have a forum, to voice their views without being attacked or chastised. We all have opinions, and we don't all agree, but let's hear what you have to say.

I'm pleased to announce that Ken Rodd will be coordinating the Pod Newsletter Contest this year. As most of you are aware, Ken created this contest when he was on the Board. He will be providing you with further details.

ITS ON!! Boomtown Chili Challenge 2011! August 27th. If your a chilihead, then you want to come! If you don't cook, judge! Come anyway, bring your friends, family and enemies to Boomtown Days Chili Challenge and stay all night for the musical concert "Blues Traveler" and then fireworks!! You cant find a better way to spend a Saturday!

From Jim Ezell:
My neighbor sent me this:
No rainfall yet west of the Ghost Town in our area, but
a good rain in the Study Butte area and in the Park.
Isolated storms are forming every day so we could
get lucky.

From Dave Hewlett:

Here is the DAM Pod's new web page.
First, on behalf of the board, I want to thank Ken for stepping up and volunteering to run the Pod Newsletter Contest.  Once he formulates the rules, I will have them posted.  Here's hoping there is a lot of Pods who are ready to enter this contest!

Second, if you are a Great Pepper and you have not sent me your Annual Report as of yet, remember they are due to me no later than August 15.  That is less than 4 weeks away.  I have already received a large number of these reports.  Thanks to all of you who have already completed your report and have sent it to me.

The August TerlinguaTrails is available in CIS!

Remember that you have the opportunity to run for one of the 4 positions that are up for election at this year's Great Pepper's Meeting.  You will find the nomination package in the Resource Center on the web site, or just contact me and I will provide you with a word copy which is easy to fill out.

This is a RULE CHANGE year!!! If you or your pod is planning on submitting a change, it needs to be to me by August 15.  This document is also in the Resource Center.  You can also contact me for a copy.

It's Friday at last!!  It is still hot here in West Texas and there is not relief in site.  On Monday, we will already have had 60 days of temperatures over 100 degrees during this year!!  If you are cooking chili, let's hope you have found a cool place.  Have a great summer weekend!

From Greg Monger:
The Vigilante Days cookoff is being held on August 13th in Tombstone AZ, not on August 6th . Date was changed by the Vigilante Days coordinator.

From Jim Trietsch (Stinkfoot Chili):
In my opinion (for whatever that is worth), it would not be fair to change anything up on the newsletter this year, but I really think it should also include or be entirely based on a Pod Web Site and or Social media. More Pods have some sort of web exposure than they do printed media for a news letter Since everything is going web based I feel that this is what should be the future of CASI Groups in general. I also think that this is the way CASI should approach Marketing and Information dispersal. I personally like getting the Trails in Printed form, but time constraints, publishing costs, and mail costs are doing nothing but going up, and at some point this will be the only way to do things. Let us look toward the future and not dwell on the past. If you really want new blood it will take new ideas, if you are happy with the status quo then get ready to be forgotten. As they say Charity begins at Home.

From Mikie McGarity:
To those of you who have responded over the last week regarding the CASI Board action to discontinue the newsletter contest, I'd like to add my "two cents" worth to the fray.

If you feel strongly that the newsletter contest should be continued, volunteer to take over the task.  I don't recall that it says anywhere in the CASI By-Laws or Rules & Regulations that the newsletter contest must be run by the BOD.  Don't just sit back and criticize and offer no workable alternative.

I agree that a Pod newsletter is an important tool to keep the membership informed and to poll the opinions of the members.

Again, I challenge those of you who profess to care to step up and assume responsibility for this task.  You've got plenty of time to prepare your criteria for the contest and present your ideas at the Great Pepper's Meeting.

From Jim Ezell:
Hello CASI Great Peppers and any interested members.
As you attend your August pod meetings, please take a moment to reflect on what you want from CASI going forward. If you will email me any thoughts and recommendations I would appreciate it greatly. I am running for director to be a positive influence and I need to know what ails you. Trust me, there are no sacred cows in this herd. Anything is fair game so let me know. I will formulate the best program I can put forth and try to look at both sides of any argument. We must openly discuss conflict and prepare a game plan for our future. I just get the feeling that our morale is not what I think it can be. My email is jezell8642@aol.com. I will not disclose any names unless you specifically want me to do that.
There is not adequate time at the Great Pepper Meeting to discuss what we have not given careful thought to. Let's start thinking now.
Thanks

From Ken Rodd:
In reference to the "Newsletter" contest I have the following facts to share.  The newsletter was an idea I presented to the CASI Board of Directors and it was "approved" by the board.  The trophy's for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place were "Dr Feelgood Trophy's" and were donated by a CASI Life Member that resides in San Antonio each year. It only took 10 minutes stage time for announcements.  The judges were CASI members from different parts of the country with a background that would be appropriate to do this task. The amount of entries could have been higher, however, many CASI members were involved in this project and enjoyed it. The contest should not have been cancelled because it was productive in ways other than the total amount of entries.

From Marolyn 'Mayo' Blair:
I am sorry to announce that the Cruise in December has been cancelled. On a personal note..... I am not able to do this as I try to do most things of "Full Steam Ahead" .....I have too many things to do right now and also.....I am not going to be able to put off my knee surgery past September and that is just too much......I had some great responses but as with the economy down, so many are just not able to take the time off and afford the luxury of a vacation right before Christmas......NEXT YEAR GANG.....as we all Pray for everything to be better for everyone.......Thank you all for your interest and support.
From Jon Tupper:
