John Henry Collins Sr.
|COLLINS
John Henry Collins, Sr, 83, of San Antonio, Texas, was lifted up from this life to eternal rest Thursday, January 6, 2011. John was born on April 27, 1927, to his parents Charles Joseph and Viola Brigid Collins. Growing up in Alamo Heights on the grounds of the Convent of the Incarnate Word, John and his brothers, Patrick, Msgr. Thomas, Charles and his sister Margaret, were nurtured in their childhood among the loving environment of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.
John was preceded in death by his wife Nita, his parents and his brothers and sister. He is survived by his children, John Henry Jr, (Pam), Thomas Patrick (Liz), and Margaret Mary Blaise (Eugene), and by his granddaughters, Christine Noel Thibodeau (Tim), and Caitlin Ciera Collins. Surviving also are Ann Collins, wife of his brother Charles, Maxine Smith, Lorene Wilkinson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He attended Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, Texas. He was the quarterback for the football squad and was given the nickname "Red Rocket" for his speedy exploits on the field. In the summer of 1944, while his classmates returned for their senior year at Central Catholic, John, at the age of 17 joined the Merchant Marines and served in World War II. He served on the S.S. Nickajack Trail and the S.S. Wallowa. He was honorably discharged after the war. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served three years overseas in Baumholder, Germany teaching artillery school there.
While he was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, he met his future wife Nita of Chickasha, Oklahoma. They married and settled in San Antonio. John went to work for the Pearl Brewing company in sales and district management. While at Pearl, John created a realistic portrayal of the legendary Judge Roy Bean. As Judge Roy Bean he appeared at many events and activities throughout Texas. He will be remembered also for his bestowing the title of "Honorary Texan" to out of state visitors at the annual Folk Life Festival. John volunteered as a docent at the Institute of Texan Cultures and gave lively lectures to many Texas schoolchildren at the Institute.
During Veteran's Day week of 2002, John finally received his high school diploma after 58 years at a special ceremony at Central Catholic High School. He was featured on a broadcast by NBC anchor Tom Brokaw in a "Greatest Generation" segment.
He was a founding parishioner of St. Thomas More Church and school, where all three of his children attended, and where his brother, Msgr. Thomas Collins was pastor in the 1970's. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Order of the Alhambra Caravan #56.
As a member of the Texas Gunslingers, John participated in countless re-enactments of the frontier times of Texas. John loved family trips to the Texas coast, visiting relatives, and attended his children's sports and extracurricular activities. He was a popular choice as a chili judge at chili cook-offs in Terlingua, Luckenbach and the Chilympiad.
We remember our Dad, Grandfather, Uncle, and friend with the fondest of memories, with the warmest thoughts, and with the lasting and enduring love by which he touched all of our lives.
Visitation will begin on Monday, January 10, at 4:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. at the Angelus Chapel. Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, January 11, at 10:00 A.M. at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word, 4503 Broadway. Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Seton Home Msgr. Thomas J. Collins Cottage, 1115 Mission Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78210, 210-533-3504.

From Vicki Childers:
I would like to thank everyone that came to Amarillo for the Tall in Texas Pod cook-off and the Tri- State Open. The weather was good for the cook-offs with no snow or rain. We had a very large crowd in attendance. I would like to thank all of those that helped us out in the judging area. If you missed it this year be sure to put January 13th and 14th 2012 on your calendar for next year.
