Attention Ladies,
The State of Kansas Women's Open Chili Championship takes place September 4th, 2010, in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The champion of this event automatically qualifies for TICC. It is open to any woman 18 years or older who wishes to compete. CASI rules apply. For complete rules goto http://www.casi.org/ click on Resource Center, and then click on Official Rule Book. There are goody bags for the first 20 cooks to register. Entry is $20 with CASI turn in time noon.

Pittsburg has drawn cooks from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas in the past, and there is considerable talk this year about travelers from points beyond taking advantage of the holiday weekend to cook in this one. The event is part of a larger city wide festival, Little Balkans Festival (http://www.littlebalkans.com/ click on News and Events). Other competitions include Kansas Hot-Wings Championship - any style, Home style chili, Salsa - $5 each. People's choice, junior, and rookie are all FREE! First Year CASI cooks are half price.
Expect the usual large public turnout so please plan to cook extra chili for all the taster's cups and help raise money for charity. There are craft booths and entertainment for you and your family.
Remember ladies; "Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach."
Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, mothers, grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins...all women who receive this invitation, we hope you join us in celebration of chili, charity, and fun.

Once again this reminder concerning the Trails and Membership cards.
Recently, some of the CASI members have determined they no longer need to receive mailed copies of the Terlingua Trails; instead, they are reading them online.
It has been suggested that the membership should be polled to determine if they wish to continue receiving the postal delivered copies of the Terlingua Trails. Likewise, it has been suggested that a new membership card doesn't have to be provided each time CASI membership is renewed.
If you no longer wish to receive your Trails by mail, please let the Executive Director know at garjans@suddenlink.net. You will be advised in the blog when the current issue is available online for viewing.
Additionally, if you don't wish to receive a new membershp card each year, please let the Membership Director know it's not necessary to send you one.
Questionnaires will be available at the Great Peppers' Meeting and at TICC for those wishing to opt out of one or both of these programs.

51 chefs compete for honors at Chili Cook-Off

Betsy’s Bar’s 2010 Spice Odyssey won best showmanship for a large entry.
Josie and Kristan Humphreys hand out chili at Josie's Spice-Pot.
ST. THOMAS — Some went for the food, a traditional spicy red stew and cold-weather favorite to be sucked up in shot-glass sized portions. Others attended for the music — blues, reggae and country wafted over the white sand beach.
But everybody at the 26th annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cook-Off on Sunday was swept up in the revelry that is bound to take place when 5,000 people converge on a small tropical beach in the heart of summer.
Yet with all those people, the chili pepper still reigned supreme at the cook-off as 51 chefs competed to create a blissful concoction to capture the hearts and warm the insides of a panel of judges.
After a full morning of cooking and an afternoon of doling out small cups of chili to throngs of hungry people, Jerry May of St. Thomas was named winner of the meat division of the cook-off. As winner, May has the opportunity to compete at the International Chili Cook-Off in Terlingua, Texas, in November.
May’s chili, called Fire In The Sky, impressed the judges with aroma, consistency, red color, taste and aftertaste.
He beat 44 other chefs in the meat division — including four visiting chefs from Texas — to get the win. Ray Calaban of Texas finished in second place.
Jes Latimer of St. Thomas won the vegetarian chili cook-off. Bordeaux farmer Ras Koniah and Dave Pemberton teamed up using local ingredients to bring in second in that division.
The space-age rocket ship booth of Betsy’s Bar 2010 Spice Odyssey won the large showmanship award. Pomeranz Pomerosa won the small showmanship award.
The smell of simmering chili wafted over the beach as women wearing bikinis and men blasting water guns mingled under the mid-day sun.
“This is a great community event. It’s got that backyard barbeque feel to it,” said Erik Ackerson, the Great Pepper of the Virgin Islands Pod of the Texas Society. “I like to say it’s a small beach party for 5,000 of your closest friends.”
While tasting the chili or buying a cold beverage at the event is not free, the proceeds all go to charitable causes.
Ackerson said that each year, the cook-off raises from $45,000 to $50,000. It is dispersed to the Queen Louise Home for the Aged, Dial-A-Ride, St. Thomas Rescue, the V.I. Institute for the Performing Arts and the Family Resource Center.

Chili Cookoff Draws Big Crowd to Brewers Beach
By Molly Morris — August 22, 2010
Betsy's won the 'showmanshp' award at the cookoff -- again. No mad dogs, a few Englishmen and about 4,500 chili-besotted enthusiasts braved the noonday sun at Brewers Beach Sunday for the 26th annual Chili Cook-off of the Texas Society of the Virgin Islands.
This year's chili had an added, though bittersweet, piquancy as the day was dedicated to Nicky "Mighty Whitey" Russell whose music has been an integral ingredient to the celebration for more years than anyone can remember. The beloved entertainer died earlier this year.
For the 40 or so cooks who began setting up, the long hot day starts before 6 a.m. Nothing can be prepared ahead of time. The double-blind judging is done under the strict rules of the Chili Appreciation Society International.
Everyone agrees it's all worth it, the exhausted, happy cooks, the eager tasters. the folks dancing in the sand, those renewing old friendships, politicians galore, even including Gov. John deJongh Jr., who was enjoying a few bites of chili with his son, Julian, in between good-naturedly fending off questions that began, "Now, governor, 'what are you going to do about,' while incumbent senators – Louis Hill and Shawn-Michael Malone – hosted their own booths.
Headlining this year's music was Texas rocker Van Wilks, while the Coast Guard did a rescue demonstration and kiddies ran around with relay races, ball tosses, and stood still for a cupcake decorating contest.
One thing that does start ahead of time is the labor for the showmanship award. Trish Hardy, a Betsy's stalwart, says they started about six weeks ago. Betsy's has taken the award for the past five years and this year's 2010 Spice Oddessy, makes it six. About 30 space invaders dressed in what looked like bumble bee outfits, with snorkels poking out at odd intervals, drifted amongst the resident alien females donned in bubble wrap skirts, and aluminum foil boots, chanting, occasionally in unison, "Back to the ship. May the spice be with you."
Meantime, dentist Donald Pomerantz held court at the Pomerosa where he was dispensing veggie chili, with an added flourish. "This'll clean your teeth and floss at the same time."
One of the head peppers, Erik Ackerson, himself done up as a Spice sun, said he was delighted at this year's boat turnout. Ackerson is the voice of the marine community, executive director of the V.I.Charter Yacht League, and host of WVWI radio show "On the Water."
"I've been inviting people on St. John and the East End to come by boat," Ackerson said. "Looks like they've finally heard me."
A small flotilla of boats of different makes and sizes anchored off the East end of the beach, while the beach itself was filled with swimmers working off all that chili.
Second prize in the small booth showmanship category went to Second prize small showmanship Katie Brockway. The grand prize winner gets an all-expense-paid trip to to the Texas town of Terlingua -- roughly in the middle of nowhere in that state's western panhandle -- in November to duke it out in the Chili Appreciation Society International contest.
Proceeds from this year's cook-off will go toward Queen Louise Home for the Aged, V.I. Institute of Performing Arts, Family Resource Center, St. Thomas Search and Rescue and Dial-A-Ride.
This year's major sponsor is Coors Light, distributed by Bellows International; Merchant's Market, which donates ground beef to each cook; Island Beachcomber, Tickles Dockside Pub, Evian Water; Fortress Storage; First Bank; Choice; American Airlines and Lew Henley.
From Ruby Ross:
Good Morning!
I feel like I have been out of touch forever.
As you know I had knee replacement on June 8th. All went well & I am recovering nicely.
I developed chronic diarrhea and had it 8 weeks. I was given medication but it never seem to take care of it. It kept recurring. After losing 10 lbs, very weak & unable to do my regular duties, I went to see Gastro in San Antonio. After many blood samples, tests, tests & colonoscopy the doctor gave me a diagnosis of severe colon infection which was triggered by antibiotics during surgery. They killed the good bacteria. Yesterday the doctor said after 4 medications for 21 days I would be back to normal. All biopsies were ok. I was so excited you would have thought I had just won 1st in Chili. I am feeling good & back to my normal activities again. I did not even go to the computer for days.
Herb's alzheimer's is progressing daily. We are going to miss the GP meeting & his BD celebration. I'm not sure he would know what we were celebrating. It is best to keep him in his own environment at this time. He goes to 'fellowship' on Thurs am & this gives me the morning off.
I am going to find someone to come in another day of the week. I have decided Chili cooking is too difficult at this time. First of all I'm not sure he will remember why he is there & the heat is too much. I am sending this out to update everyone on what is going on in our world. I need to stay in touch & updated with our chili family and my Sisters. It makes me feel good to know you are all there if I need you. Since I am feeling better "Life is Good". Love to all & God Bless!

From CASI President, Renee Moore:

Second Post for Friday:
If you have something that you will be presenting at the Great Pepper's Meeting, please send it to me by August 25 so that it can be included in each of the GP's packet. I also need to know if you are wanting to have something to present and you need to have it on the Agenda.
The Post for Monday will be late. I will be gone for the weekend until late Monday. I can be contacted on my cell phone.
For those of you who plan on cooking at the Shrine CCO in Abilene, TX, I have been notified that you will be able to cook in side and that tables and chairs will be provided.
I only have 3 Annual Reports missing. I know that one of them will be in the mail. I have contacted the GP of the other 2 Pods. Thanks to all of you who sent your report in on time.
If you are going to be a new officer for 2010-2011 CASI Chili Year, you must have your dues paid before your GP will have their Annual Report approved and be allowed to be seated at the Great Pepper's Meeting. The fastest way to make that happen is to use Pay Pal.

From the CASI Board of Directors:
The Board of Directors, both past and present, have always appreciated the role the TICC champion plays in promoting both CASI and TICC.
Immediately following the announcement of winners, press releases are emailed to major newspapers and those within close proximity to the champion's home. Admittedly, we have never followed up to see if the releases were printed. We do know we get limited press coverage in the West Texas area, as evidenced by reporters being on site and through copies of newspapers we have been provided.
We are aware of the expenses prior champions have had in their efforts to promote CASI. Many champions have chosen to attend state cookoffs in areas not within their home state, either at their own initiative or as a result of being invited by the promoters of the cookoff. Over the last couple of years, partial reimbursements have been made to champions to enable them to attend. We do know that even when a champion is invited to a cookoff, it may not happen due to scheduling conflicts.
As evidenced by the Minutes of the January Board Meeting, the subject of reimbursing the champion for attendance at cookoffs and sponsor events was discussed. Sponsor related events would be coordinated through Jim Ezell as Sponsorship Chairman, with other public relations opportunities coordinated through the Public Relations Committee. Recommendations would be made by Mr. Ezell and/or the PR Committee as to expense reimbursement for approval by the Board.
While it is acknowledged that this may not be perceived as "promoting" the champion, we were making an effort to assist with travel funds for the champion's appearance at cookoffs of their choosing that were felt to be an opportunity for exposure of CASI.
CASI does not, nor has it ever had, a true public relations person on the Board. In the past, we have called upon certain CASI members with a public relations backgrounds to assist in the preparation of press releases and brochures. To employ a public relations firm, as I'm sure most of you know, would be cost prohibitive.
We are proud and supportive of all past champions and make every effort to recognize them. If we have failed in this endeavor, we are truly sorry and will make every effort to rectify the situation. It is said by many that the Board does not respond to overtures by the members. We are attempting to respond but also need your assistance. If there is a CASI member who has a public relations background and would assist us in the promotion of the TICC Champion, we would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
As many of you are aware, proposals are up for debate at the Great Peppers Meeting concerning this issue. Rewarding and promoting the TICC champion is a priority at this point, but the proposal must first be defined, then approved, if it is the desire of the members.
From Ed Nesbit:
We have enjoyed a number of thoughtful comments over the last few days on this blog, starting with Steve Nadeau's open emails to the board and his comments about them. I feel his concerns are valid and if CASI is ever going to attract enough new cooks to replace the ones leaving, much less grow, we must make changes. I, like many members, take pride in CASI being a non-profit organization that contributes to charities all over the country. However, I differ from some, in that I don't agree that being an all volunteer organization is necessarily a benefit. If you look at our competitor in the chili world, ICS, they too contribute to charity, but are controlled by one person through the work of a hired professional manager. Whether you like it or not; in the eyes of most of the public across the nation, because of television exposure and professionally done marketing, they are perceived as the large dominate organization in chili. This of course, is not fact, but having a professional PR manager working on their behalf has allowed them to sell it to the media and an abundance of sponsors. I have been on the boards of two charities in my life and both of them were non-profits that had all volunteer members doing the work and managing from the board, but both had a hired professional that ran the day-to-day affairs and did the organizations’ promotion and organization of events and for good reason; it left one person with the focus, time and resources to get the job done. What CASI currently has is a great group of committed volunteers that all have the rest of their life to deal with and their commitment to their hobby is a side line, as it should be. Because of how good and how committed our directors and volunteers are, I believe we are getting more out of this system than any other organization of its type. But, as it is, I do not ever expect we will see issues like Steve rose addressed to full potential and opportunities taken advantage of to the extent available as if we had a professional doing this job the way it should be done.
I understand this would be a large change for us, so I would ask that you consider the benefits of an organizational change that would create a paid Executive Director position for a professional public relations/events professional to be hired by the board and answer for results to the board. I hope this idea will merit conversation at the Great Pepper's meeting and if a consensus for change comes then a committee to draft the organization changes and create the job description and duties would result. This would then lead to a future vote from the Great Peppers after thoughts and comments from members.
Please consider this change, talk about it with others and express your feelings to the board and your Great Peppers.

From Brent Allen:
It has been with great interest that I have followed the blogs, emails and Facebook posts the last couple of days. There have been good points and information put forth by several. So here are some things I see and feel from all of this.
I believe that the directors, and I mean all the directors, and want-to-be directors, are in this for the good of the organization. They are not going to become rich or more popular; so the only reason is to do it for what they believe.
If you say that you want change, then do something and then let the members of the organization know what is being done. We all know that some things don't move fast enough so keep us in the loop.
CASI - the big purpose here is charity; that is what I continue to hear. I believe this is a great thing, but as with any organization, business, or even family you must make that solid and stable to do the most good. Invest in yourself; it will profit ten-fold and more as the organization grows. And yes, it can grow.
Depending on free press has never, and will never, work. In the world today you are forced to spend something on advertising if you want to have a chance against the other guys. If the cost of PR and advertising does not seem to justify the anticipated outcome, do what you can to change the outcome, but it is still a must.
As far as a Public Relations campaign goes, that should be one thing that never stops. I agree that the best for this job is probably always going to be the TICC champion. But past champions, state champions, Pod's and directors can all fit into this campaign.
Sponsorship will probably always be one of the hardest things. I see no reason that this has to be a director’s position; just the person that has the guts to do it. Sponsorship has many aspects and is not based just on numbers. Remember, quality counts too. Many would rather have a thousand chili cooks that use a stove than ten thousand at a rock concert that have never heard of a stove.
Stay in contact throughout the year with your sponsors, potential sponsors, events, organizations and promoters letting them know of PR opportunities. They will never think of it again if you don't remind them.
As I see it there are two options here. CASI does not make changes, stays the same, we all have a great time, raise money for charity, then we just fade away. Or, we do something, make changes, make it fresh, keep it fresh, get new people and money involved, keep having fun, make more money for charity and keep this thing going for years to come.
Remember - If it wasn't for different opinions it would do no good to have an opinion.
And note to directors -- If you want change Do Something. It will make some unhappy, it will make some happy and it will make more work for you. That's how you know it's Change.
A Story from a Canadian Chili Lover in Mexico:
My name's Jerome. I have been in love with chili ever since I was in high school in Ajax, Ontario, Canada, more than half my life ago. My friend Mike Woodburne used to invite me and the gang to his house annually on Superbowl Sunday for a Superbowl Party. His parents did the cooking, and even allowed us a few beers. They made sandwiches they called "stubbs", which had eggs, cheese, bacon, and sausage patties, all on fried Texas toast. And they made a big pot of chili. Mr. Woodburne made the chili three days in advance. He swore it made the flavours better. Darn that was good chili. He has since taught me the recipe (including the elusive secret ingredient, the revelation of which would create waves across the entire worldwide chili-eating community) and although I have adapted it considerably, I still think of it as Woodburne's Three-Day Superbowl Chili.
Around that time I learned that in a faraway land called Texas they had spectacular Chili Cookoff contests. One day going to one of these contests became a dream of mine.
Years passed. University, first love, travel, new homes, new jobs, new foods, second love. I went all over the world and did great things, but I never made it to Texas for a Chili Cookoff... until last month.
I am a teacher in Mexico City, and was approaching my summer break. It was finally time. I bought a bus ticket to Texas to go to a Chili Cookoff. Thanks to your excellent website I was able to find one near Austin, a city I wanted to visit anyway. It was the "Outlaws & Ladies Barbecue and Chili Cookoff" at the Waterhole Saloon in Del Valle. I contacted the organizer with my resume, told her my story, and requested to be an Official Judge. She was happy to oblige. Soon after I was on a 24 hour bus ride heading North, crossing the border at Matamoros, and arriving in Austin ready to go. The next morning I headed out of town to get to the Cookoff (a bit of hitchhiking was required at this point, but Texans are friendly people.) Arriving at the Waterhole Saloon, I walked in... And the event was cancelled. There were a couple old drunk guys at the bar (it was noon) and an apologetic waitress explained it had been cancelled due to lack of participation. I told her I had come from Mexico City to be there, but there wasn't much she could do about that. I had even worn my nicest shirt to appear more judicious. I sat under a tree outside, pretty bummed out for a bit. There was a tin of salmon in my backpack, and some trail-mix, but every bite reminded me of how much it wasn't chili.
(This was the low point of my trip, but I went to lots of other great places in your wonderful country, and ended up having a fantastic vacation anyway.)
Arriving home in Mexico I decided to take matters into my own hands. I'm happy to announce that in a week and a half is the very first "Mexico City Texas Chili Cookoff". We have 7 chefs on board so far, several dozen judges (everyone who doesn't cook will judge,) and I'm extremely excited. I'm getting a bottle of champagne for our winner, and we'll get a trophy made, maybe something for the runners-up too. I've attached the invitation below, as well as our Chef bios. If you have any CASI Directors in Mexico City, or if somebody wants to come on a vacation, they are certainly invited (although we're allowing beans... sorry!) I'll even spot any CASI Officials the 30 pesos entrance fee.
Thanks for your great organization. I hope to meet some or all of you sometime in the future at a big Chili Cookoff in the States. Wish me luck with my own! Maybe Woodburne's Three-Day Superbowl Chili will take home the ribbon.
Big chili hugs to my friends up North,
Jerome

From Jim Ezell:
I would like to take a few moments of your time to address the comments espoused by Steve Nadeau.
Since the late 90s, I have been very unhappy with the utilization and recognition of the TICC champion. I do not think that is a secret. Public Relations is and has always been, in my view, the biggest weakness of CASI. The vocal nature of Mr. Nadeau's pleadings is just a more eloquent culmination of years of dissatisfaction by the champions. It has been my frustration to observe this discontent and not act on it accordingly. It is difficult to financially justify a PR campaign when our membership is spread so thinly over a vast geographic area. We have thus had to depend primarily on free press or public appearances in select venues. The cost of advertising is constantly brought up to the board and the cost usually does not seem to justify the anticipated outcome. We have also never been able to attract that special person to the board that would have a knack for making this magic. Perhaps some of the detractors would like to come over to the dark side and experience the reality of board/membership interaction. Remember, this is not a Margaret Nadeau issue, it is a CASI issue.
Four years ago, I was charged by the Great Peppers to come up with a way to fund and reward the TICC Champion in a monetary amount. I have submitted a proposal to address that issue. I also put together a package of gift items for the winner that I felt was long overdue.
Two years ago, I gained board approval to submit on a case by case basis, funding requests for the winner to travel to events I believe to be in the best interest of sponsorship. The board has gone along with these requests although sometimes the dollar amounts were not what they could have been.
I have always conveyed, as part of the sponsor presentation package, that CASI would be happy to provide the current or a former TICC champion at any event chili or non-chili where a benefit would be felt by that sponsor. The photo issue is a non starter as everyone knows that stage photos are a vital part of our ceremonies at TICC.I always emphasize that our representative would be glad to promote the sponsor and its association with CASI. In addition, I always remind sponsors that this feature is available to them after TICC. Below is the context of the email sent to some 50 sponsor representatives Dec 14 of last year immediately following Margaret's win.
Subject: Availability of TICC Winner
To all our valued sponsors.
Our 2009 Terlingua International Chili Champion, Margaret Nadeau, has graciously agreed to make her time available for sponsor functions or related cookoff events in the coming year. If you have something coming up that would benefit you by having this CASI Champion there, please contact Margaret and see if arrangements can be made.
Margaret is a two time Terlingua Champion, having also won it all in 2005, She is a beautiful and talented person who has much to offer in promoting CASI and our sponsor products.
As most of you know, CASI is a charity and we do not give prize money to our winners. If you would like an appearance, we would of course like you to help her with some of the expense she may incur.
This is a win win situation for your company and CASI and we would love to share our winner. Please contact Margaret at mnadeau@gvtc.com or myself at jezell8642@aol.com if this might interest you.
Thank you for your support, and Best Wishes for a prosperous New Year.
Jim Ezell
I guess the major thrust of where I am going with this is evidenced by the Four Point Proposal I have placed before the membership for consideration at the upcoming Great Peppers Meeting. Much of the thought and reasoning that went into this proposal came as a result of the situation outlined by Mr. Nadeau. I have been working on it since the early part of the year for submission at the summer board meeting and action at the GP meeting. The four points are:
Membership
Great Peppers Meeting
Scholarship Funding
Recognition and rewarding of TICC Champion
I will be available at the GP meeting to address this proposal and defend it. I welcome any comments or criticisms on this proposal by any member and have been attempting to travel as much as I can lately to interact with more members. The only other point I will address is the insinuation that sponsorship is somehow demeaned by not being handled as a board position. If there is discontent with this current status I can resign, as I serve at the pleasure of the board and membership.
In closing, lets use this situation as a positive and work toward the betterment of our organization. We are not perfect, but we have come a long long way since my early years with CASI. We have a limited, dedicated, diverse and sometimes vocal membership. Each and every member has earned his or her right to be critical of management. Criticism is part of the venue and comes with the job description each aspiring director must accept. Before you "Throw the Bums Out" make sure the talent pool is the real deal. All a former director has to show for countless hours of service is a plaque and a satisfaction that somewhere they made a difference. Please forgive the abundance of ( I's) in this memo, but I am not speaking for the CASI Board of Directors, but as a non-board contributing member that greatly enjoys my association with CASI.
I do not have a distribution list as to where Steve's memo went, so I would appreciate this reaching as many CASI members as possible.
Thank you
Jim Ezell

POST SCRIPT: I sent out numerous Press Releases with her picture following TICC to announce Margarett as the TICC 2 time Champion to include the Boerne Paper. I followed up on those releases by accessing each paper's web site. I found that only 2 printed the release and they were both in West Texas. There also was a lenghty discussion during our January Workshop which is also documented in the January Board Meeting Minutes.
From Larry and Janie Burruss:
Wow what a weekend and congratulations to all of the winners! The First U. S. National Open Chili Championship was a great success. A HUGE thank you to all of the cooks, Dog Luhn for being head judge, Ed Blair and his tally crew, Donna Conrad & Dianne Stimson for the cooks party, to everyone that monitored, served drinks, judged etc. Thanks to Red Caldwell for being the M.C. Doc Kinnison for referring both days and Pat Pilchiek for assisting at registration and in the judging area. A big thank you to Robert & Connie Schrade and Roger & Cindy Patteson for being there from the beginning to the end and volunteering to help in every area without being asked. A "Special" thanks to Cabela's, Heb, Wal-Mart, Chili's Restaurant, Hampton Inn and Aces Pod for donations and offering discounts. Wendell Rankin donated a stove to the championship that was greatly appreciated. It is hard to list everyone that helps so please forgive us if we have over looked anyone but know your contribution was appreciated.

From Dave Hewlett:
My name is Dave Hewlett and I am seeking a position on the CASI Board of Directors because:
I believe I bring a unique set of skills to the operations of the CASI organization and to its future success. I have been a leader and key manager in the business world for a long time and I have attended a lot of leadership and manager training in the public sector of business. I understand the value of teaming and working within the guide lines of good team building. I understand the value of respecting the management team and how to work thru issues and conflict to arrive at a solution that is acceptable to the management team and those that will benefit from those decisions. I listen well and am interested in the inputs of the CASI members.
I have deep skills in computer software and hardware, Leadership and Management skills, I did all the registration and financial planning for the 2007 Great Pepper meeting and the Salado 2010 GPM. I have access to the CASICIS Data Base(DB) and have been responsible for producing numerous extracts from the DB for labels and data for a number of requests from the CASI members. I believe in mentoring new cooks and helping them to become CCO winners. I support the CASI idea but will raise issues when they seem to need reviewing. I have deep management and financial skills working with the
full set of Microsoft office tools. I have 40 years of background in software programming. I ran a $2M business at Texas Instruments supporting
the many Semi-Conductor factories around the world. I have electrical and electronics back ground. I listen to the members of CASI and represent their needs as the needs prove to be valid and needed. Quote "Dave believes in the
CASI rules".
I believe in communications between the CASI board and the members of CASI and the Great Peppers of the CASI pods.
I have been cooking for 6 years and I have been the Pepper Popper for 2 years and the Great Pepper of the Dallas Area Metroplex for 2 years. I was the Great Pepper of the Thousand Trails Tawakoni for 1 year. I have been married to Nancy Hewlett for 32 years. I have 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 dogs. I am retired and have lots of time to donate to the CASI organization.
