This Saturday, November 5th, three mayors and other dignitaries will serve on a judging panel to determine the best chili cooks in north Texas. Mayors include the hosting Mayor Bill Goodson of Whitewright, Mayor Jeff Stanley of Howe and Mayor Kim DeMaster of Van Alstyne. Sitting at the judging tables will be other elected and appointed officials, interested citizens, and those selected from the festival crowd. It is taking place in Whitewright, Texas, at the North Texas Firefighters Chili Cook-off, part of the Whitewright Area Chamber of Commerce Grand Street Fall Festival.
The cook-off is sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International and is a fundraiser for volunteer fire departments to help them buy what they need to save lives. CASI is sending a referee from the Greenville area who will oversee the cook-off and judging.
Contenders include fire chiefs and firefighters, boy scouts, local competitors and people from all over Texas, each boasting to make the best chili. Competing VFDs, so far, are from Howe, Savoy, Tioga, Trenton, Van Alstyne and Whitewright. Anyone can compete and it’s not too late to join this friendly, fun yet serious competition.
There is a lot going on that day. The Fall Festival is a lot of fun for all ages - children’s activities,, wine-tasting by a local winery, great shopping with local shops and vendors, unbelievable food from local restaurants, fun-to-eat festival food, child model contest, continuous stage entertainment, antique car show, motorcycle show and more. After the festival, an indoor auction is scheduled downtown and later a bluegrass concert at a nearby opry house.
In the cook-off area you will find enticing raffles that include everything from an iPad2 to jewelry to a tandem skydive, plus amazing door prizes. After judging cups are turned in, the public can purchase tickets to sample the contestants’ chili’s and vote for their favorite to determine the People’s Choice winner.
We hope to see you on Saturday.
