From Elton & Norma Homesley
Once again Marathon hosted a wonderful Fourth of July double-header cookoff. The weather cooperated for the fourth year out of the five years these cookoffs have been held. We had low 90's for a short time on Saturday afternoon and then the clouds moved in and the temperature dropped into the 70's. Sunday remained in the 70's all day.

The Marathon community and the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department were great hosts and we appreciate all that they do. Daniel Eaton, MVFD Chief and his crew hosted a stew and burrito supper on Friday evening at the Marathon Motel & RV Park. Saturday night Craig Carter entertained at a dance at the Post and the MVFD provided shuttle service to and from town out to this wonderful park with its spring fed creek and big pecan trees.

Thirty four cooks showed up for each of the two cookoffs. The MVFD and Marathon Community Library along with Norma and I wish to thank them all for making the trip. A very large thank you to the Black Gold Pod and especially Dave Boone for all that was done to keep the cookoff on the proper track and making sure that everything ran smoothly, "It did!". It was great to see Ken Large come out for a visit on Saturday. A very special Thanks goes to Lloyd Goldwire for the two bronze trophies.

We would also like to extend recognition and acknowledge the four cooks we had participate from Marathon (five counting Norma). Another person to be recognized is Jim Stateczny who brought his B-B-Q pit over and cooked hot dogs and hamburgers both days for the crowd collecting donations of over $200 for the MVFD. Thanks Jim!

Most importantly, we wish to recognize Boomer Kingston for coming over to be our Emcee on Saturday and Marathon's very own Linda for doing the deed on Sunday. Boomer has now been our Emcee for all of the five years - A Big Superlative "Thank You! Boomer"...

2009 MO State CCO Info

Thanks to the many that have called about the 2009 MO State CCO and their indications of coming and wanting more info. Thru the means of this column maybe I can touch more people and you as the cook and reader might pass this along also.

The CCO will be held Saturday July 18th in the Moore Pavilion which is a Large Morton Metal Building with electricity / just off the Northeast Corner of the Lamar Square. We will share the Pavilion with the Area Farmers for part of the morning, they will be selling all those Fresh Farm Veggies, and the Amish settlement will be selling Home Made Bakery Goods. Merchants from the 4 state area have donated many large items for a Public Raffle & Silent Auction.

Several spoke of bringing a Motor Home, and if we had a RV Park and if they could cook beside their Motor Home. The answer being Yes / Yes / Yes.

I just came from a meeting with City Officials this evening and Motor Homes are more then welcome in the City RV Park. The RV Park is located in the Northwest corner of the 25 acre city park / easy access in and out. Electrical & Dump hook-ups are available or you can just pull in and park. The park also has spaces for Pull Behind Pop Ups and Tents. There is NO CHARGE for the use of the area, the only things the city ask for a donation of $10.00 if you stay over 2 days.

If you are coming and will be driving a Motor Home I DO NEED TO KNOW IN ADVANCE TO SCHEDULE PARKING FOR SATURDAY @ THE CCO. Motor Homes will be lined along the South & West Sides of the Moore Pavilion, you will have plenty of room / level asphalt paving / and electrical outlets. Motor Homes will enter the CCO from Poplar St. Anyone that does not have a pull behind and needs transportation while you are in Lamar it will be provided. As we will be on City Property and across the street from a Large Church QT all Alcoholic Beverages (as all good chili cooks do) and all Pets Must Be On A Leash. Health Department says we have to have Canopy's because of the Pigeons.

A large Cooks & Sponsor Appreciation Party will be held Friday Night @ JR's Northfork Ranch starting Mid Afternoon till ??? JR's ranch is located just about a mile North of our detail shop. Signs will point the way.

We would like for all that can attend to try and make it as every thing raised during this 3 days will go to The St. Mary's Catholic Church Rebuilding Fund. St Mary's was a 105 year old land mark that was destroyed by Arson set be a 19 year old kid on METH. Feel free to call for additional information, Dixie Johnson / 417 / 682 / 5432 or e-mail me @ jrj8@sbcglobal.net.

In addition to the above information about the Missouri State CCO:
Rosary will be recited Friday Night the 17th & Mass
will be offered for Russ Harriman on Saturday Night the 18th.
