I got a thing on my e-mail this morning that Southwest Airlines has a special today and tomorrow that there are many flights from many cities to Midland/Odessa for travel in September and October for $30 to $90 one-way ($60 to $180 round trip). This might be of interest to some. It has to be through the internet booking.

Well Another wonderful H-E-B Georgetown cook off has come and gone and once again they were very pleased with our contribution to their charity we are already planning next years cook off so mark your calendars for the July 4th weekend! Sue Caffey presented the store director Terry with the plaque that was given out at TICC and he will see that E.T. Ferris gets it since E.T was unable to be at the cook off. This store does so much ALONE for CASI maybe next year more of us can show our thanks by coming out. I want to thank John Caffey for being head judge. Larry Burruss for referring,Billy Doss,Steve Ashman,Alan Dean my Tally crew, and Susan Dean for being my monitor, Neal Doss for helping set up the judging table. Those of you that live in Terlingua, are probably well aware of the flash floods on the roads.

One of our cooks send me the link on You Tube on what one of these milder flash floods look like.
I found another link that showed one that looks almost identical to Well Creek on CASI property.

While we may never see a flash flood happen while at TICC in the Well Creek, Any thing is possible.

I hope that the Directors continue to enforce the "no camping in the creek bed" rule.

Flash flood safety measures were one of the first things we were taught in Army Basic training at Fort Hood, TX.

Hello, I know it is early for TICC 2009, but I would like you to start thinking if you would be able to spare a couple of hours at the Krazy Flats Saloon selling beer, soda, ice and merchandise items. Last year was busy and total sales reached an all time high. We have times that are really busy such as Wednesday afternoon which is Garland Elks Day, Thursday we have the Breakfast, then in the afternoon we have Krazy Flats Open house with Happy Hour, Friday is steady during the day with Friday evening busy after scholarship day is over. Saturday is tough with people cooking their chili, seeing show and all the main activities- but the saloon is still open for business. Then Saturday night after announcements it gets busy until closing. Thanks for thinking about it.

I did not get anything to post today, so I am going to provide you with the Report that I provided to the Board at our meeting last Saturday.

Executive Director’s Report

Since our January meeting I have been successful at providing a Blog for the CASI membership. I continue to learn more about the process every day. There is still a great many of our members who are unaware of this blog, but I have advertised it in TTs and as many other places as I can. Hopefully little by little the word will disseminate through our membership.

I met with Jim Stateczny at his office and learned the process for creating Log Ons for our members and have provided log ons to a large group of our membership. When I provide a log on, I check the personal record of that person and request the missing information so that I can update each file. This has been very successful and many of the membership have current information in their personal files.

I collected and standardized each of the Job Descriptions for positions on the board and for other activities that many of our board members are assigned. This is a large document and is for some jobs quite detailed. This should be helpful as new board members are elected. I plan to place it in the Resource Center once it has been reviewed and accepted.

I prepared applications for the Krazy Flats Position, the Special Election, and for the Annual Election of Board Members held in September at the Great Pepper’s Meeting. I have worked with Jim Stateczny to have them posted in key areas on the CASI Web Site.

Along with Bucky, Tim, and Ken, we met with an Insurance Agent and reviewed our various polices. Several areas were discussed and there is a concern about the Liability of our Board Members.

With the help of Bill Pierson, I have prepared a proposed Bylaw amendment. This includes making changes to update and clarify several areas of the Bylaws.

As changes are identified, I have corrected and updated the Rule Book and then had the old copy replaced by the new updated copy.

I prepared the Credential Annual Report Form with the cover letter. I tried a new method of distribution this year as a trial. It was emailed to the Great Peppers of each pod. In turn, they contacted me to verify if they would use this electronic report or if they wanted a copy mailed to them. This was an effort to save CASI money on the printing, the envelopes and the postage. This Process was accepted and seems to have worked. I only had to mail out 15 copies and I delivered one to a pod in our community.

I receive emails from Jim Stateczny on a regular basis from people who have sent him requests on the web page. Most of them are requesting help planning and executing a new CCO. I identify members to help with this process as well as steer them to the Rule Book for more information.

I have promoted the use of the Resource Center, and I will continue to do this. This is the place that we should have our Official Documents and CASI information that is up to date. It needs to be a showcase so that it sells CASI and draws people to inquire and want to know more about us. It is not there yet, but if we continue to work on it, we will get closer to having a great Internet site.

SPONSORSHIP REPORT TO THE CASI BOARD
JUNE 27, 2009

Greetings to the Board on the occasion of your summer meeting. I am sorry I am not in attendance today, as I believe this is the first meeting I have missed in 13 years.

While the sponsorship program started the year in a somewhat unsettled state, I am pleased to report that many positive things are coming together as we approach the Great Pepper’s Meeting.

The only firm negative I have to report at this time is the loss of Ancira in the Gold Sponsor Category. Although I hope this will not be a permanent loss, at this point we have no funding from them. They are good until September and maybe we will have a better report from them or a sponsorship on a smaller scale.

The other Gold Sponsors are on board again. I have received great reports from the people at Mondavi/Woodbridge and they look forward to another year. After a scary start with some of the many new people at Bruce, they have assured me they are still firmly behind us. The situation with L & F for Budweiser is confirmed and I am still pursuing the proposal to build a Legacy Sponsor from this. Hill Country/Jim Stateczny is still providing his valuable services on an ongoing basis.

At the Silver Level: The contract is in process for the Texas Lottery to return. I have requested an increase to $3500.00 for their participation as they want the option for a second booth at Krazy Flats. I have negotiated for the 1500.00 in gift certificates for the winners at Lajitas and it appears the margarita booth in the original scenario is off right now. They will also be providing 15 rooms for VIPs and Sponsors at a discounted rate.
On a very good note, Permian Distributing (Lone Star, Miller, and Coors) was bought out by Glazer’s. I was concerned about the ice trailer and still have not got the details worked out. I have been assured, however, that the man we dealt with at a lesser level last year is now running the branch and thinks well of us. The very good news is this: the purchaser of Permian is Glazer’s where we have valuable ties. I believe that by next year this will move to a Gold Sponsorship and probably bring back Corona and possibly some of the New Belgium Brands in addition to Lone Star, etc. Right now I have a tentative meeting with the McCormick Distilling Brands: Tequila Rose and Tarantula Tequila. I know we will get a better program from them this year and hopefully some nice perks, if not cash. I have no news from Capital One to report and need to put my head together with Ken Rodd for direction on this.

At this point I do not know of any defectors amongst our smaller sponsors. I will get with each and firm up before the poster deadline. I want to call special attention to the matching funds Scholarship and Local Business sponsorships we have benefited from the last few years. I know I report at the meeting each year that we raised $10,000.00 for this and it really is a fact. I was able to attend the graduation exercises for Big Bend High School and believe me, I was very, very proud as the ten graduates that were moving on to college all received CASI/LOCAL Scholarship money in amounts from 3,000.00 down to 500.00. This is something I sincerely hope we can continue to implement, as it brings tremendous attention to us from the standing room only crowd.

In closing, we will have a good year. I have two potential sponsors in negotiation with good prospect. I am in hopes of better than expected returns from several existing supporters. The addition of Kiowa Casino will be valuable and another Indian Tribal group is taking a look at CASI. I have been staying busy and I believe our program is thriving.

My name is Kelly Brignon and I would like to announce my candidacy for the CASI Board of Directors. I have been a CASI cook for six years and CASI has become a family affair. I cook with my husband Gary and our daughters Zoe and Paige. I am from Waxahachie, TX and I serve as the Great Pepper of the North of Waco (NOW) Pod. I am also a member of the Top of Texas and Cowtown Pods. My husband and I own T & B Demolition in Irving, TX. I have been in the construction accounting field for fifteen years and we have been in business for six years.

I have given a lot of thought to a position on the CASI Board of Directors. I feel that CASI is at a crossroads that is driven by both its history and its need for growth and change. One of the most challenging issues my husband and I face as business owners is the balance between doing what has worked in the past and evolving in a way that continues to guarantee success for the business. First and foremost, CASI is a business and should be run as such. I strongly believe that my business experience, coupled with my accounting background, will benefit CASI should I be elected to the Board. I have been responsible for our financial statements, daily operations and all aspects our business’s insurance since its inception. I am convinced that my experience in the above fields will be an asset to CASI, especially right now when everyone is experiencing financial hardships. I believe in cutting costs on items that are not profitable and spending money in the areas that can help CASI reach out to existing and new cooks, the charities, and our sponsors. The cooks, new and established, along with the charities and sponsors are what make CASI work. We need to explore different ideas in our effort to let people know who we are and what we do in order to revive our organization.

I believe that membership should be a focus of the incoming and current Directors. I think that giving incentives to cooks and Pods signing up new members is a great way to revive our membership numbers and again, reach out to new cooks. CASI is here to raise money for charity. The more people we have cooking chili, explaining our mission to the public and to the charities in need of an organization to help them raise money, the more exposure we are going to receive. This applies to our sponsors as well. In this economy, we must explore every avenue and idea available to us to continue to generate revenue for CASI and all that it is responsible for, including the Scholarship Fund and TICC.

CASI is an organization I strongly believe in. However, I feel that the way we’ve been doing things could benefit from some fresh perspectives. I am not a fan of reinventing the wheel, but I believe that change can bring positive results. I feel that our Board should be more accessible, transparent, and accountable for the decisions made on behalf of CASI’s cooks, charities, and sponsors. I believe an annual review of our year end financial statement should be conducted by an outside accountant. CASI is too large of an organization to not have reviewed financials at the very least. As a Director, I would strive to look at all of the operational budgets of CASI and see where we could benefit from cost cutting measures. I know that I’m young and maybe a little too idealistic and that not everyone will agree with me. I don’t believe any of us benefit from not asking questions, and not challenging the way things are done. The only way we are going to grow as an organization is to constantly look for ways to improve how we manage ourselves. Innovation is the key to survival for any business, and CASI is no exception.

I ask that you support my nomination with your vote and allow me to bring my strong work ethic, business experience, and positive attitude to CASI and the Board of Directors. I will serve CASI in any capacity that is asked of me. I am fully aware that you cannot make everyone happy and you are always going to ruffle some feathers. I do believe that focusing on finding a solution to CASI’s challenges is the only way we will survive as an organization. CASI is doing something right or it would have fallen apart years ago. By taking a look at what is working, tweaking what needs improvement, and giving everyone’s voice merit, we will solve more problems than if we just sit around and complain at our cook offs, and go home without a real solution being found. I do not feel that the Board of Directors should be a vehicle for personal politics or agendas. As a Director, my only concern will be CASI and the integral people that make it successful – the cooks, charities, and sponsors.

I need to clarify the membership information that I reported yesterday. We have had 258 new annual memberships in the past 12 calendar months. We do not have a decrease of 25% but would actually show an approximate 25% increase if all members had renewed their memberships in this same time period. We have an actual increase of 2.5%.


Barbara Herrin, our CASI Scholarship Chairman presented her report to the Board. The following in the CASI Scholarship Program Guidelines. This will be placed in the Resource Center in the near future. Please review these, so that we can assist those students who are interested in receiving a CASI Scholarship.

There will be more information on this report as I go through some more of my notes. The Board voted to extend her term for 3 years starting at this Summer Board meeting. Her term will expire in June 2012.

The Board moved to add to our current policy on TICC Show Winner Jackets, that for Winning Show Teams only show team members showing at TICC will be eligible to purchase a Jacket. Just a reminder: If full payment for these jackets has not been received within two weeks following TICC, no extra Jackets will be purchased.

A Report from Douglas (Bucky Seelig) on the Terlingua Trails that because of the increase cost of postage, the expense for the Terlingua Trails has increased in the past year. An example of this increase was that in November 2008, it cost $6.81/box. In June of this year, the cost had increased to $8.38/box. After some discussion, it was determined that there would be a limit to the number of boxes of the Terlingua Trails sent to an event. There will only be a box sent for each event if requested on the application. If more boxes are requested, the expense for mailing that box would be charged to the promoter at a rate of $10.00 per box. The default on the application will be changed removed. If you require a box and have not indicated this request on your application, you will need to notify Dorathy Williams.

He also reported that there had been a problem with the June distribution of the boxes. He has researched this, and has found that somehow the printer prepared labels from a previous month's list. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused any of our membership.

We will be revisiting the cost of placing an ad in the paper at our January Meeting.

While I am on the changes that we will make to the forms that we currently use, we will add a line to the Results Sheet that provides an opportunity for each CCO to make an additional donation to the CASI Scholarship fund. This donation will be optional.

Ken Rodd reported that he is currently working on the press release for TICC. Boomer Kingston is preparing the public announcement that will be used.

The board moved to once again offer the Military discount at the gate at TICC this year. You must present a Military ID Card to receive this discount
