I just received this email and thought I should do a second blog to let everybody know about Richard King

There is tragic news today. Our great, good friend, Richard King, died in the ICU at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital last night.
After showing signs of progress for several days, Richard took a sudden and fatal turn for the worse as his vital functions shut down.
No arrangements have been made as yet, but we will try to let you know as soon as they are available. Richard was a principal founder and driving force behind the expansion of chili awareness and competition on the East Coast. He was much loved and we will miss him terribly.

Another week has come and gone. I hope all of you who are cooking this weekend have a great time and great weather.

The minutes of our January Board meeting are complete. I have sent them to the Great Peppers and the Regional Referees. We will also have them on CIS.

This year at TICC Casey Pilgreen's band will be our entertainment. They should provide a great time for all of us.

We are know receiving bids for the TICC T-Shirts for this coming year. The point of contact is Bill Pierson. There is an article in Feb Terlingua Trails that outline the process for the bid. If you know anybody interested in bidding, please have them contact Bill Pierson.

Bucky Seelig is going to try and add a column that have all of the Blog sites and Pod Web Pages for all of our Pods. If your Pod has a Web Page, please let Bucky know.

In Tim Collier's Ranch Report, he reported the need for a wall behind the Pavilion. It is needed to divert the rain runoff that is backing up along the back wall of the building and causing the metal sheeting to deteriorate. This was a proposed action that was approved by the board.

He also asked us to approve the purchase and installation of a 1,000gallon water tank with pump and spray nozzle at Krazy Flats for potential fire fighting ability in the future. This was also approved by the board.


Ralph Hay introduced a change in wording of the Old 320 Rules concerning the paragraph on Privileges of Members. The current wording mentions members and significant other. There was a request from 320 members to change significant other to guest. After a discussion, this was disapproved.


Renee Moore had prepared a CASI Policy Manual, covering the period from September 1982, till January 2008, after much research through previous records, minutes, etc., and would like it to be considered for adoption. This Policy Manual was adopted.

I hope all of you have a terrific Super Bowl weekend. I will leave out any prediction or who a support. If you have items or suggestions for this column, do not hesitate to send them to me.

Today will be a short note. I have a couple of CCOs that they have requested for me to advertise. I am still learning how to get these fliers into the Blog. Have patience with me as I learn. I finally got this next one to copy for me.

Attached is the flyer/registration form for Kokomo. You will notice that a JR’s class has been added this year. It is free with an adult entry.
Also, it’s a little confusing if you want to cook more than one category (ie: CASI/Fire). We asked about the fees for this and were told that it would only be one registration fee of $22.
If you need electricity, you must contact Rhonda and let her know in advance. You can register online at http://www.memberservicecenter.org/irmweb/wc.dll/inkokcoc?id=inkokcoc&doc=events/event&kn=77
HOWEVER, if you register online for more than one category, you will be charged for each. My suggestion if you want to register online, only register for CASI and do the other(s) the day of.

New location for Tyler Elks Lodge cookoff on March 14. Their building is going to be torn down, so their cookoff has been moved to the building and grounds of the Union Hall across from the Old Kelly-Springfield Tire Plant (Now Goodyear) on Hwy 31 West. Approx. 4 miles from Loop 323. RV's welcome but no hook-ups.
Please note that the Tyler Elks Lodge cookoff is not a Pod sponsored cookoff, they set their own date and have for many years. All RCCP does is provide an official.

It has been noted that several of the regular CCOs that are held each year are not yet on the calendar. It would help if you would get them scheduled so that some of the smaller CCOs could set dates that would not conflict with your CCO.

Enough for today. Please send me any thoughts about what you would like for me to address in this column. Thanks to all of you who have let me know that you are following this blog. I learn a little more each day.

Bill Pierson, Vice President/Tally Master report that to date he has received results form 152 CCOs compared to 150 in 2008. There have been 4500 chilis compared to 420 and we have raised $380,000 compared to $333,000 Last year. To date there are 74 qualified cooks. Last year at this time there were only 57 qualified. There are 40 show teams qualified compared to 34 in 2008. SO despite the economy, we the chili cooks are doing a great job "Promoting Chili while having a lot of fun and making money for our Charities."

Dorathy reported that since October she has sent out 239 packets for CCOs. This is 20 less than a year ago. Remember that you can complete a Chili Application on the Web site. It's fast and you save the price of a stamp.

Again this year at TICC, if you have a Military ID (active, retired, reserve, dependents) you will have a reduced gate fee.

This last TICC, 219 Old 320 owners cooked on site. After a discussion, it was decided that instead of giving $100 to 3 of the Old 320 members who cook on the 320 site, we would give 2 of Wendel Rankin's painted stoves.

It was determined that maybe we need a person to be the Krazy Flats Coordinator since the rest of us are busy promoting CASI. There is a lot of activity in the Krazy Flats area and it is a full time job. This position will be by application and selected at the June Board Meeting. The term will be for 1 year. We will revisit this position at our Winter Workshop and Board Meeting and determine if it helped make TICC run smoothly. Watch for that application if you are interested.

Jim Ezell (Sponsorship) reported that the economy has affected all of our sponsors and it appears that they will be able to give us less this year because they are struggling. If you know of a potential sponsor, please let Jim know. We had 23 sponsor's last year. We need their support. They provide not only products, but money which help fray the cost of TICC.

Those of you who are making reservations for the Great Pepper's Meeting, please remember to give the code (CAS). It would be wise to make your reservations early.

From Bruce Smith: We had a Great turn out for the 33rd Arkansas State Open Chili Championship. We had 64 cooks on Saturday and 28 Sunday. And yes those folks came down from Indiana and kicked our butt. Thanks for traveling that far to cook and have a good time with us. Its always fun to have folks from out of state to cook with us. Hope you had a good time and hope you come back next year! Next week its Louisiana's turn. I think a bunch of Arkies are going there to cook. Lookout, here we come!

Well, this is enough for today. I have to go out and bare the cold. It is 27 degrees and for us that is cold. I know for many of you, it would feel like a heat wave. Have a great Chili Day.

Today I am sharing some of the decisions we made for TICC this year. We will again offer wine at the concession stand. It was received very favorable this year.

We will have a new Head Judge. It will be Diane Fitzhenry. We want to thank her for volunteering for this job. We would love to have a second person step up and volunteer to assist Diane. This is a big job and we need to have a lot of hands helping to make the job go smoothly. We want to thank Jim Luhn for his many years of service as head judge. He did this job for a lot of years. THANKS JIM.

Referees for the Saturday CCO will be Bill Pierson for the Tally Group and Renee Moore for the judging area. Since we require a Referee to be identified for all of our CCOs, this year we are identifying the referees for the TICC.

Of course we always need judges for both Friday and Saturday. If you know someone who would like to have an invitation to judge on Saturday, please send their name to Renee Moore. She will also have a sign up sheet at TICC for those who have not already volunteered to judge.

This last year there were no volunteers to assist in Highway Clean UP. Please consider volunteering to do this job. THANK YOU Scotty Johnson for doing this job by yourself last year. He has volunteered to be head up this job for a another year. It will be done on Wednesday at 9:00. Please consider helping Scotty.

Do remember that "First come, first choice" when it comes to parking. Of course, we need to remember to only take up as much room as you need so that there is a parking place for those arriving each day. The areas fill up fast and we want to make sure that there is a place for every cook to park.

We will again have a Pod Newsletter Contest for the chili year 2009. Ken Rodd is the Director in charge of this event. I will provide the information for entering when it gets closer to time. We have some great newsletters, so it should be a great contest.

I need to remind you to always be on the lookout for the old style Coleman stoves so that we continue to have a supply for painted stoves.

As I promised, I will little by little report on the Board's meetings this weekend. We ratifed the Rules Committee. The members of the Rules Committee are Member at Large - Guy Smith; Greaet Pepper - Preston Shaw; Director - Bucky Seelig, and the Ed and Vice President which is myself and Bill Pierson.

We approved the National Open CCO. It will be held on August 9 at Buda, TX. Larry Burruss is the contact for this event.

We approve the use of the Ranch for the Mas O Menos 100 Bike Race which will be held on February 12 - 14. They have rented the Ranch for several years for this event. Renting the Ranch helps with the upkeep of the Ranch.

We approved the request to have a Massachusetts State Open. This is the first year for this event which will be heldin Middlefield, Massachusetts on August 15.

We acknowledge that two of our Directors are not going rerun for office at the Great Pepper's Meeting. Bucky Seelig and Ken Rodd have announced that they are leaving the board after this term. We are going to miss both of them. They have made a large contribution to CASI. We will miss their talents.

Bill Pierson has announced his intention to run again for the CASI Board of Directors.

John Goforth announced that at the present time CASI has 915 Annual Members, 494 Life Members, and 42 Corporate Members which is a total of 1451. This is down from last year which was 1493.

Congratulations to Barbara Herrin. We elected Barbara Herrin to be the Scholarship Program Administer for the next year.

Just returned from the Directors Workshop and Winter Board Meeting. I will begin to post information from this meeting tomorrow.

I did want to share with you the information from Ken Large. "Sad to report that my wife, Barbara Large passed away shortly before 11:00 pm last night.We are meeting with the Funeral Home this morning and will have more information later. Thank you for your prayers and e-mails, it has ment a lot to me." Barbara is in Pipkin Funeral Home, 2805 N. Big Spring, Midland, TX. Visitation will be from 6pm dto 8pm, Monday, Jan 26. Indterment will be in Ridgeway Cemetary, Sulpher Springs, TX Wed, Jan 28 at 200 pm. Please keep Ken and his family in your prayers.
