After much thought and consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the CASI Board of Directors in September. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as TallyMaster and as a CASI Director. It has been a real treat to see all the cookoffs that CASI sanctions each year and the efforts that everyone puts forth in order to get their paperwork submitted and in on time. I have enjoyed working with my fellow Directors on various projects and especially TICC, one of the greatest events that I have had the privilege of being a part of, in an area of the country that is a real treasure. That doesn’t change the fact that due to a very demanding work schedule I simply do not have the extra time that is required to perform this job and serve on the various committees to the best of my ability and in a manner that the membership deserves. Thank you for your support and understanding.

Poster Contest Guidelines

Ø When designing the piece of art, please keep in mind that the poster is a vital element to the success of the event. The artwork that is chosen will not only become the official poster of the Terlingua International Chili Championship, but it will also possibly add to the development of the retail merchandise.

Ø The artist should design an initial draft of poster artwork. If selected, the artist will work with CASI staff in making changes and developing the final piece.

Ø Artwork must incorporate the following elements:


        * Name of Event: Terlingua International Chili Championship
        * Annual Designation: 45th Annual
        * Date of Event: November 5, 2011

Ø Artist should keep in mind that the finished poster must also include the Sponsor Logos and pictures of the previous year’s winners.

Ø Artist should design artwork with the use of bold colors.

Ø Actual size of the finished poster must be 18" X 24" and artwork must be camera ready.

Ø If selected, artist agrees to relinquish ownership of artwork.

Ø If selected, artwork becomes the sole property of the Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc.

Ø If selected, artist agrees to sign and number fifty (50) prints within 30 days of request.

Here is the Obituary for Carl Gross
Carl Lee Grose, 75, of Cash, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2011 in Greenville. He was born on March 20, 1936, in Hot Springs, Virginia, the son of Carl Oliver and Margaret Helen (Thomas) Grose. He married Jackie Arlene Spence in September 1988. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant in September 1988 and retired from E Systems in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Elks, a lifetime member of CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) and cooked a mean pot of chili. He gave his life to God in 2009. He loved his family, friends and would want everyone to remember him with a smile and laughter or not at all.


He is survived by his wife, Jackie Grose of Cash; four sons, Darren Grose and wife Jeanette of Jacksonville, FL; Kevin Grose of Clinton, Utah; Michael Grose and wife Brittany of Sasche; and Douglas Folks and wife Sita of Greenville; three daughters, Carla Grose-Sanders of Pine Springs; Vicki DuVall and husband Chris of Kingston; and Tonya Grose of Greenville; one brother, George “Jo Bo” Grose and wife Marie of Hot Springs, Virginia; three sisters, Helen “Sis” Shaffer of Hot Springs, Virginia; Anita “Snookie” Anderson of Churchville, Virginia; and Joan Thomas of Latonia, KY; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He is preceded in his death by his parents and son, Randy Lee Grose.

His funeral service is planned for Tuesday, May 10, at 10:30 am at Quinlan Funeral Home with Brother Brett Bird officiating. His burial will follow the service in the Dallas/Ft. Worth National Cemetery at 2:15 pm. Visitation with the family will be Monday, May 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. The Black Gold Chili Pod of Midland/Odessa would like to remind everyone that we have a great new location for our Pod Cookoff, which is scheduled for May 14, 2011. The cookoff will be in Crane, TX at the Crane County Park on 6th Street. We have held our Guess Where CCO and On The Road to Terlingua CCO at this park several times so you may be familiar with the beautiful park with its many shade trees, walking path and easy in and out access. The park has limited hookups but plenty of parking for all. It is a great place to sit out in your lawn chair, relax and enjoy visiting with friends.

We have planned the usual Friday night Fish Fry which features Fried Catfish and all the fixins'. A Raffle and 50/50 Drawing are on the agenda along with a Saturday night 42 tournament. We have added a Youth cookoff to be held on Saturday for those under 18. Turnin is at 12 noon, for the Youth, entry fee $5 with very nice prizes to be awarded.

There will be a Saturday night meal with the Pod furnishing Chicken Strips and French Fries. Pot Luck dishes would be welcomed if participants would like to add salads or desserts.

There is also a "Day After" cookoff scheduled on Sunday at this location. Please put this one on your schedule, we hope to see you there!!

It is finally the month of May which signals just two weeks for the Kansas State Chili Championship held in Overland Park, Kansas.
We have learned that among the participants, International Champion Jerry Hunt, who won the 1990 Terlingua International Chili Cook-Off plans to attend.

The State Championship takes place on Saturday, May 14th. at the Overland Park VFW Post #846. Located at 8804 Grant, Overland Park, KS. Take 87th Street east off I-35 for 1 mile to Grant, turn right, the VFW is 600' on the right. EASY TO FIND!

The winner receives a beautiful Wendell Rankin stove, and automatically qualifies for the 2011 Terlingua International Chili Cook-Off in November. CASI rules apply. CHILI GRIND ONLY.  Entry fee is $20.00 for CASI, $20.00 for HOME STYLE, or $30.00 for both. Turn in times are 1:00 pm for CASI, and 2:00 pm for HOME STYLE. This CCO benefits the local VFW charities. Tent and RV parking is available, with limited hook-ups. TURN IN TIME ALLOWS FOR TRAVEL TIME!

All participants, both cooks and judges will be treated to a free BBQ dinner Saturday evening following announcements and raffles. THAT'S RIGHT A FREE DINNER!

The Highland Lakes Pod invites you to join us for The 40th Annual "HOWDY-ROO" CCO and The Highland Lakes Pod CCO "Backbone Creek" on May 7th and 8th in Beautiful Marble Falls, Texas. Howdy-Roo is a Regional Cookoff this year. Also, there will be a Lonestar BBQ State Championship. Win a Trophy-Chair-Points! There will be travel money for 1st place chili and 1st place show. We hope you have put this cookoff on your calendar, you will be glad you did.


Paul Mulkey from Hobbs, New Mexico will be back to see if he can make this #3 in a row. He is our reigning 2009 and 2010 1st Place Chili winner.

Registration begins early afternoon on Friday. Lonestar BBQ meat inspection will be on Friday afternoon. Golfing on Friday with a T-time 12:30 p.m. Please contact Doc if you are going to play golf (gather at the Kinnison camp 11 a.m.) The Cooks party will happen at 7 p.m. and this will be followed with music by Nigel "Taco" Delgado.


Saturday evening Potluck will start about one hour after Saturday's annoucements with games and fellowship following the Potluck.
