From Jim Stateczny:
The problem with the Tally 3.1 program has been found and corrected in version 3.2. This version has been posted on the CASI web site. It seems that Microsoft made a slight change in the way the print dialogue box needed to be called when using a 64 bit computer. It took quite a bit of digging to find it, and it was found when a web forum was located discussing the problem. It seems that we were not the only folks experiencing the problem, and the frustration in determining what it was. You will know when you have loaded the new program correctly because it will reflect version 3.2 on the opening screen.

NOTE: Please mark your calendars for June 30. The CASI Board of Directors will be having their Summer Meeting at the Irving Elks, Irving, TX. The meeting will start at 8:00 AM. All CASI members are invited to attend. If you have something that you would like to have the board address, please get it to me as soon as possible.

From Pat King:
It is with great sadness that I report the death of Ira "Duffy" Duffield of San Antonio. Duffy died today in San Antonio. He was a long-time chili groupie - His wife, Irene, was the cook although Duffy did place 5th in Terlingua in the 80s. He is survived by his wife, Irene, two children and two grandchildren. There will be a memorial service, and I will let you know the details when they are available. Please keep Irene and her family in your prayers.

From Robert (Wappo) Schrade:

For those of you who did not know the "Duffy", you missed out. He was a great person and was one of Ray Kings partners in the early years. I was very lucky to know him well and able to call him a friend.  He will be missed but never forgotten.

Dana Plocheck states that a picture of Ira with his wife Irene is in the Trails this month.

From Alex Tanalsky:
The Spice Up California CCO scheduled for June 2, 2012 has been canceled. Some Chef's backed out at the last minute and we are shy of the minimum.

From Darin Jester:
Ladies and gentlemen,
The Three-I Regional Open Championship is less than two weeks away. It will be held in beautiful Ottumwa Iowa at the Greater Ottumwa Park, intersection of US 34 and SR 149. It is not too late to register. In addition to the CASI Championship division, there will be a homestyle contest and a salsa competition. Ottumwa is pretty good for getting out the public, so extra chili will be appreciated. The cookoff will benefit the Food Bank of Southern Iowa, so we want to sell many tasting cups. Let me know if you would like more info or the cooks flyer and I will email it out to you. email me at flashoverchili@sbcglobal.net.

From Keith Karaff:
Hey there chili heads..........if you're not headed to North Texas this weekend think about coming to Tomball TX for their first citywide cookoff. The cookoff will take place in the city's historic Depot Plaza..Plenty of room for daytrippers. Just a couple of notes please.
Set up time begins at 7am. Registration will start at 9am. Please wear your CASI shirts etc....would really like to see CASI well represented as there will be many of the city dignitaries out for the day.
They would like to block off the roads at 10am. Please try to be on site before then. For the best place to unload your gear, once you are on S Walnut cross over Market street. Turn left on Fannin. This is a dead end street and after unloading you can park there. Once that fills up you will need to unload and then park across the street in the public parking area.
As they are selling beer, etc. please be discrete with your adult beverages. Sleeve them or put them in a glass please.
Also, if you can, please bring throw down for the public.......this part was not advertised but since there have been many inquiries, if you'd like to participate please do so.
For those of you on the road this weekend, be safe out there and good luck.
From Kim Hiley:
It is with GREAT SADNESS that I must, at this time, advise everyone that the "Return of the Chili Queens" cook-off this weekend has been CANCELLED. Unfortunately, there have been some changes at the Market, mainly a new BOD.
While most wanted to still have the cook-off the President was not in favor. And then, somehow, the City was called to get involved and that opened a WHOLE new realm of issues. I was put in contact with a man from the City that didn't quite understand the cook-ff procedures. Then this man, not knowing or understanding, panicked and started opening doors to other issues. The City now says we need Health and Fire Permits (which we've never needed before).  The cost of the permits would be extreme and would not be beneficial or profitable for the charity. Greg, from the Market, and I have worked very hard to try to keep this cook-off in tact for this year but at this time we have to make the call and say that it will be CANCELLED. It's unfortunate and disappointing to say the least. We'll have the cook-off next year as we now know what we're up against. And if need be we'll move it. However, that takes away from the atmosphere and culture that makes the "Return of the Chili Queens".

Thanks to all that have supported this cook-off over the years and we'll see you
there next year.

From Jennifer Sherfield:

The Great Pepper's Meeting will be here before we know it. . In the next few weeks, I am going to start working on the GP's Meeting video, like I did last year. I would really love to have pictures from all of our regions. Please send pictures to jennifer.sherfield@yahoo.com.
Thanks,

2nd Post for Tuesday:

From Ed Blair:
Carroll Shelby
Bob Coats, thank you for your comments regarding one of the initial winners of the CASI Pioneer Award, Carroll Shelby. Given his death was so close to the publication date of the Trails, your idea about honoring him is well taken. We are writing an article worthy of his stature for publication next month. As for funding Carroll's charity of choice, I would expect instead that CASI members would donate to the CASI Scholarship Fund in his honor, as is customary for honoring our Chili Family deaths in recent years.
From Bob Coats:

Who is in charge??

When Carroll Shelby passed away on May 10, the President of CASI asked if someone would send information concerning Shelby’s connections to chili.

What Director is responsible Advertising and Public Relations?

It appears that the board has laid a very large egg!  ICS has already set up charity site, on their web site, for donations to his special charity for children with hart and kidney problems.

Has CASI done anything to honor this Texas icon?  The Board gave this man a founder’s award at TICC last year. Did they loose their notes or did they give it only on hear say?

The Board is elected to present CASI as an organization that is well run and organized.

I would suggest that someone on the Board check out that new fangled thing referred to as the internet! It is time for the entire Board to step forward and accept their responsibility to run this organization and quit passing the buck!

In parting I will contribute a couple of facts.  He was one of the original promoters of Terlingua and was there for the event. A few years after he gave the original ambulance to the Medics he made the statement to me. “You would think someone would have said Thank You.”

Thanks

From Jim Statecny:
The problem with the Tally 3.1 program has been found and corrected in version 3.2. This version has been posted on the CASI web site. It seems that Microsoft made a slight change in the way the print dialogue box needed to be called when using a 64 bit computer. It took quite a bit of digging to find it, and it was found when a web forum was located discussing the problem. It seems that we were not the only folks experiencing the problem, and the frustration in determining what it was. You will know when you have loaded the new program correctly because it will reflect version 3.2 on the opening screen.

From Sherry Davis:
Please paln on joining us for this CCO.

JESTER SEEKS SECOND TERM
For the past two years I have been your Membership Director.  During my time on the CASI Board, I have made some changes in how your memberships are processed.  Steps were streamlined to speed up the time frame from receiving your dues to when you receive your renewals.  By printing your renewal cards on your letter verses sending out new laminated membership cards each year has saved CASI money.  There are several items that are in the works that I need to continue working on.  With this being said, I am asking for the opportunity to continue serving you by staying on the board.  As always, I am just an email or phone call away.  So, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.  Thank you for your continued trust and support.  May Chiligula Bless Your Day.

NOTE:  Frank Fox Memorial will be Sunday the 20th at 2:00. We will gather at Lakewood Funeral Home at 98 Dixie Dr in Lake Jackson/Clute.
