Republic National Distributing CO is sending 7 people and a motorhome to TICC this year. Republic through its combination with National is now the second largest spirits and wine distributor in the United States. I cannot emphasize enough how important it could be for CASI to make a favorable impression on these people. They already represent McCormick and Woodbridge. This could be a huge sponsorship for CASI.
 
We are also fortunate to have the participation of Glazers. With its marketing partnership with Southern Dist, Glazers is now the number one distributor of spirits and wine in the US.
 
Do what you can to get the word out to our membership to help us out. I am very proud we are dealing with companies that have tens of thousands of dollars available through hundreds of brands at their disposal. Look what the Bruce Foods and Woodbridge connections have meant to us. In this economy, our wellbeing depends on these valuable contributors.

What a day we had at Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine, TX for the 5th Annual Stop, Drop & Roll Chili Cookoff! Robin Williams and her WPI Firefighters Fund crew went well above and beyond in getting this organized. There was great weather, lots of vendors, thousands in attendance, Scott Whitaker on stage and the Dallas Margarita Society in full force! We had 56 CASI entrants and 39 Novice division chilis. What a busy day! My sincere thanks go out to the judging crew of Dru Stewart, Jim Ezell, Babs Johnson, Doris Coats, Chuck Edmonds & Mack Walker. Also, many thanks to the Tally crew of Kelly Brignon and Courtney Bowden. You can’t run a cookoff without great people and these are some the best! We will update the financials later but an early guess is well over $10k raised (I’m probably way low on this guess-timate). Now, the winners:

Greetings everyone. The 33rd Annual Texas Open is right around the corner. For those that haven't heard, the date has been changed from May to February. We moved it to May from August because August was too hot. In May, not only was it too hot, it was also the day before Mother's Day. (Sorry Moms). So, here we go and hopefully for the last time. The new date will be February 20,2010.

We will still be at Papa's Ice House in Spring TX. The folks there have been really great to us and are looking forward to having us there again. We are blessed to have two wonderful hard working charities. There is room for RVs but no hookups. More info regarding hotels and the cookoff will be forthcoming.

Now for the reason I am writing. Since we are so close, we will be holding early registration for the Texas Open at TICC this year. It will be open from Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6. Now: where to register. The Texas Open banner will be hanging from my motorhome. There will be a table with registration forms, envelopes and a box to put the completed forms in. Entry fee will be $30.00. Checks only please. My motorhome is usually located next to Ralph Hay, across from Keith and Jean Barkley and Carrie and Doc Kinnison at that end of the cooks area. We certainly hope that you can join us this year in Spring. Hopefully with the date change, we can change the qualifying numbers and qualify 5 this year. Hope to see you there. Thanks everyone. Remember that you can buy your beer when you get to the Ranch instead of having to tote it all at the CASI Concession Stand. The prices to CASI members, preferably in 5 case lots is:

Premium Beer 22.50 plus tax or rounded to 24.50 for a 30 pack.

Lone Star 12.50 plus tax or rounded to 13.50 for an 18 pack.

Wine 55.00 per case.

This should be cheaper than anyone can purchase it elsewhere, but it helps the sponsors.

There will also be ice, water, and sodas for sale at the Concession Stands.

All wine leftover after TICC may be purchased for 55.00 a case. That is 4.25 plus tax a bottle due to our bulk buying.

Please bring all your collected excess "goody bag" stuff to Big John and Blu's big white bus at Terlingua for distribution to the Terlingua school students. This was a big hit with the kids last year but we didn't have enough for all the students. They have 128 students this year, up from 118 last year so we will be glad to pass on pens, pencils, pads of paper, keyrings, koozies, plastic cups, t-shirts, caps, calculators, first-aid kits, etc ...everything you won't be using from your cooks goody bags over the past year. Family friendly only, no beer logos- and please, no obviously used items. Please have everything to us no later than Wednesday morning as we will be assembling these Wednesday afternoon. And of course, any late arrivals will still be welcome.

ALSO, if you got LadyBugged last year, remember to pass it on anonomously Friday evening for good luck to a cook on Saturday and tell the person you gave it to last year that it was you. I know some people have not been able to find theirs from the first year so I will try to have some extras so we can keep this tradition going, but the whole idea is to keep it secret for a year, then tell. First year recipients were Dani Medlin, Sue Caffey, Alan Dean, Karin Barnes, Susie Shaw, Cindy George and Tamara Dees. I know because that's where Jan Young and I left them. We'll see what kind of circle these little cuties travel!

Texas Open date has been changed from August to February this year.  They will be holding early registration for the Texas Open at TICC this year. It will be open from Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6, with a banner displayed from a motorhome.

Volunteers Needed for Old 320 Area. I need help with marking off the cooking Sites in the Old 320 Area. I will need to have my volunteers ready to start helping to be in the Site Area at 9:30 A.M., Wednesday 11/04. I've had some very good workers in the past, hopefully I can depend on you to be there for me again this year.

There will be an Old 320 Meeting on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 P.M. It will be held in the Judging Area. Please try and attend this meeting.

I would like to see the Arena filled with Cooks this year. It looks good for our Sponsors, they will be able to get a better view of how their sponsorship is helping CASI. The pictures that show 350 plus Cooks will make great advertisement material for them to take back home.

You do not have to own a 320 Site to cook in the Arena. Anyone qualified to cook, that needs a Site to cook on, should let me know, and I'll be able to assign you a Site that has been made available. When you come up to Register to cook, I will be set up in that Area. Please come by and Register with me also.

This year we will be giving out 2 WENDALL RANKIN PAINTED STOVES for 2 lucky Cooks, that are cooking in the Old 320 Arena. I would also appreciate 2 volunteers, preferably not cooking chili, to pass out the Raffle Tickets for the stoves. This should be done after the cooks have all set up in the Arena, approximately 9:00 - to 10:00 A.M.

Anyone wishing to get on the Old 320 Site Waiting List, must give me this request in writing, properly dated. I will accept e-mails, mail, or in person, as long as it is written.

Our annual Tequila RoseBud Social Hour is coming together to be a very special “pink & black” event for 2009 at TICC! It is open to all women at Rancho CASI de los Chisos as a night of camaraderie and fun. As always, we hope to entertain and touch your heart. Dazzling trophies are planned the Tequila Rose Cooking Contest (see rules in October TTT), and there will also be great door prizes and sweet surprises!

He called about 3pm today and said they had moved him to another floor and the swelling in one leg is going down. I asked if they had mentioned releasing him and he said maybe Wednesday or Thursday of this wweek. He also said he would try to make Kaufman if he got some crutches in time.


I would also like to let you know that if you have some time tthat you would like to volunteer, I can use help at registration to distribute the "Official CASI shirts" to the incoming Great Pepper's and Regional Referees.  If you are a Great Pepper or an Regional Referee, when you are at Registration, remember to stop by and get your "Official Shirt."

News about Larry Wampler. He had a problem last weekend with bad pains in his leg. They did not know what it was. Yesterday they found a broken capillary in his esophagus that was allowing blood to be pumped into his stomach at each heart beat. He had surgery and is doing ok today.

Later News about Larry Wampler:
They have moved Larry to ICU in Greenville. They have given him 11 pints of blood so far. Rex talked with him this morning and Jackie G. went by to see him this afternoon. He has a leaking capillary in his stomach and they have to go in and patch it. That was the reason for so much blood loss.

Well, it is getting close to time to pack and leave for Terlingua.  As always, this becomes a very hectic time for most of us as we plan, pack and start on the trail to the big cookoff.  For all of you who for the first time will be cooking at Terlingua, I want to invite you to attend the 1st Timers Reception which will be held on Friday, Nov 6, at 4:30 behind stage.  It is really a fun time for each of you.  I want to also invite all of the previous winners of TICC.  It is a time you can share with these new cooks all of you fun experiences.  I hope all of you 1st time TICC cooks and all of the previous TICC winners will mark your agendas and I will see you behind stage on Friday Afternoon.

If you haven't visited the CASI web page for a while,  you should.  Go to the Resource Center and see all the information available to you there.  The new amended Rule Book is there as well as almost any official document that you might need.

Be sure to log in to CIS and go to the History section.  You will find that I have posted all the information from the Annual Credential's Reports in several different documents.  You will be able to find a list of the Great Pepper's and their contact information.  There is also all of the information that I received from each Pod.

You will also find a section that has the list of all previous Great Pepper of the Year recipients, Special Award recipients and those who have received the President's award.  Also there is a list of all of the previous CASI President's, Executive Directors, and the Old 320 Acaldes.  History of 3 of our Chili Pod's is also located in that area.  As we compile the history of each of the other Chili Pod's, I will also put them into this section.  If you have your Pod's history written up, please send it either to me or Renee.  We will review it and then put it into CIS.

Susan Dean had the opportunity to attend the California State Championship last weekend.  She and Alan were guests as several functions.  We will be getting a report that I will share.

All of 2009's pigeons are in the coop. We sanctioned 542 cookoffs this year which is the fewest since 2003 (532) and 23 below average.


The good news is that final cookoff produced qualifier #468 which is one fewer that the record (469) set in 2003.

The 541 cookoffs reported in the Trails raised $1,373,300. The 542nd cookoff added $500 to that total, so $1,374,000 is a good number.

The CASI CCO scheduled for Nov 14 at Daytona CCO is Cancelled.  I'm in the process of talks to move it to mid Feb. 2010.

I am also emailing all FL cooks to inform them that the event is still open to "open" cooks, but will not be a CASI sanctioned event.

After a few years acquiring chili friends across the country, I've decided to settle down and start the new chili year to qualify for CASI 2010 .. I've won Texas Open and placed CASI in 7th place and it was wonderful. So I loaded up and headed to a local Terrell cookoff and took a short cut which ended in a dirt road which had a low spot and I was stuck in mud. I called the cookoff at PeeWees in Terrell and PeeWee said he would come get me. He had to come in behind my van and by the time I was rescued he was covered in mud and his leather seats were nasty. I followed him and was able at least to judge the chili.


My point is ... I've driven to Terlingua for 15 years as a woman alone and I was always hopeful that if I broke down or got in trouble on a lonely road, a chili cook would come along to help ... so whoever you are, there's a long road ahead to Terlingua so look out for your friends and neighbors, thanks PeeWee.

Just an update on the Apple Valley cookoff Saturday Oct 10. Sadly, we had only six cooks and so it turned into an 'open.' It's a shame, really, because the event was very well organized, and the museum staff and volunteers were all enthusiastic and helpful. Also, the trophies were fabulous -- beautiful, handmade pottery items  However, everyone seemed to have a great time and they have already decided to try again, so I'll keep working with them.
